C5X DAYTONA

Here is a picture of my Daytona on the Salt in 86.   Before the big storm came and turned it into the BEST PHOTO OPP ever.   I see you have a picture of your Bird that day and I have one of Vernon's Daytona with all the water.
Caution.... Low flying aircraft.

I can't imagine that Vern would have known anything about the K & W car. It just wasn't in his time out there. I don't believe it ran in 1969. I think it was 1970 only. I believe it also raced up Pikes Peak in 1971. K & W of Whittier Calif. had several great business cards. My favorite is a drawing of the #83 Daytona on a circle track. The owner is around but he realizes what the car is and doesn't want to sell it. I e-mailed him last week. I won't give you the serial # info. I'll talk to the owner this week. I know he won't be held up like Dean Quimby was for Vern's old engine.

Attached engine shot from Landracing.com from 1970.

I don't think Vern ran till 1986 at Bonneville.  I did go up in 86 and went with him and Joe Slama in 1988.   But Jim Lindsley did bring up the K&W car in conversation.   It was just a thought is Vernon might of known where it was..   Wonder why Gary Nichols said after Bonneville they came and got the car and sent it back east.  That's odd.  But then again.  I didn't wright it down..  Now I will..   I was talking to my dad today and mentioned you.  He said,  I remember.  They didn't put in any oil..   See I was not the only one who thought that...      I do remember you saying a while back you had put too much Vaseline in the oil pump..  My dad too remembers one of those big (maybe 1 1/2 gallon) stainless oil doo dads with the spout that swings down.   Maybe my dad and I were smoking crack even back then... .   Not a problem on the vin,  Just wanted to look it up in the old records.  That is great that the car is still around.    But please keep me in touch on the car.  Maybe some current pictures.  I would love to go out and show Gary.   I know he would really like to see it again..

Sean,

As I have said before one of the people helping me one year put some vaseline in the oil pump to help prime it, it was a mistake and it caused me an enormous amount of trouble. It was my car and I was responsible for it. So you know a tiny thing about me.

Oh, I believe you.  Someone was just being a joker on the oil thing than.  I hope you let the Vaseline guy have it... :RantExplode:        What is the currant condition of the K&W car?

Thanks guys for all the pictures and info.  I was talking to a member of our Horseless carriage club the other day and mentioned wanting to run at Bonneville and was told his brother is married to Craig Breedloves sister. We have had a few old car tours to Craigs place but now I have a reason to go talk to him some more.

Right now my Daytona clone is on hold while I order parts to make it worth running on the salt, That and 3 members of my family are just holding on to life from terminal cancer so that is taking up almost all my time visiting with them trying to make them happy in their last few days.

I will post more when I get more done and get back in touch with Craig Breedlove. Maybe I can talk him into driving my car on the salt.

There is an article in Hot Rod Magazine this month on how to / what to expect in running the salt. You can also buy the rules/records book from the organizations. I picked one up in 05 - great info and fun too read.

The folks who have run have all told me the same thing: You'll never get 100% of the salt out of your car again.
