i'm gonna be doing afew more modifications to my 413 for my charger here in about a year (after i pay the car off)..including, boring .30 over and hopefully finding domed pistons, aluminum rods, it already has a forged crank, and i'm either gonna buy a set of edelbrock heads or put the money into the 516 closed chambers...anyway, does anyone know if anyone started producing 413 pistons yet? i know when i bought the engine they were really hard to find, but i have been seeing some on ebay off and on and was just wondering if someones producing them again or if people have just had them laying around....thanks

edit: ok i've been doing some research...i'm still fairly new at this so bear with me for a minute

i read online and talked to an old mopar man in my area, and he said that you could bore a 413 out to put 426 pistons in it...so going on that, if you look at the chart above from moparts..a 426 and a 383 (low-block 383) have the same bore, so would it be possible to bore my 413 out to 4.25 (from 4.18) and put domed 383 pistons in it? just a thought...

(sorry for the bad quality of the graph, it didn't come out as straight as i hoped)
Daddy ran whiskey in a big black dodge
bought it at an auction at the masons lodge,
Johnson County Sherriff painted on the side,
just shot a coat of primer then he looked inside,
well him and my uncle tore that engine down,
I still remember that rumblin' sound.....

i checked out the paw catalog for chrysler and did see complete piston, rings, bearing sets at a steep $ of  $1000.00 .  been thinking of a cross rammed 413 for my charger for some time now but parts avail. is making this tough

Bandit72

geez, at that price it might just keep the stock flat pistons....

Diamond , JE etc will custom build 413 pistons , probably in the $800 range

using a 383 dome piston in an RB 413 block would give you a whopping 7.5:1 copression

Bandit72

hmmm, well, i thought i figured it out, what would the difference between it and a 426 piston?

compression height [distance from the center of the piston pin to the top of the piston] is 1.91 on the 383 dome piston & is .017 blow deck  , the 440+6 pack piston which is still .020 below deck has a compression height of 2.061 so the 383 piston would be .154 down from the deck [ the 6 pack piston will be the same dimention as the 413 piston except the diameter]

I don't know how many bare 440 blocks are around your part of Kansas, but if your going to have to buy pistons anyway, consider swapping everything into a 440 block.

The only difference is the pistons, and there are a lot of options out there for 440 piston applications off the shelf.

You could have the 440 block machine work done, and ready for the rebuild when it comes time to pull the 413, saving your Charger some down time.  Another plus is you'll be gaining 27 or more cubic inches, more horsepower.

Something to think about.

*"Build the biggest engine you can afford the first time."
*"We normally wouldn't use a 383 for this build, parts and labor for a 440 cost the same."

i would find a 440 except 1) they are near impossible to find around here, and 2) my 413 is really clean and i've always heard the old timers talking about how much "stronger" the 413 blocks are than 440. (thicker main castings)
