So My mind thinks it is on the right track, but please see if I am or not...

I just installed an all new reproduction engine harness. It's the older one for "Points style" ignition.  So imagine a stock 1968 Charger.

Now, I am installing an internal regulated Denso Alternator (60 amp) and also a 6AL ignition with Mopar electronic distributor....

It's starting to look like I don't need ANY of this new harness except for oil sending unit, temp gauge, and horns.  :brickwall:

So my question is, can I just remove the factory voltage regulater and the ballest resistor and just tape those wires off?? It looks like I need to run a good 10gauge wire for the alternator, and the 6AL unit is standalone for the most part.

Any ideas??

if i remember correctly - you'll bypass the ballast resistor - connecting all the wires ---  the newer denso can be modified to use an external regulator (an external regulator is more reliable) - there is usually a plug on the back - remove it and there are two field connections...    you can use this to run your existing regulator.  :2thumbs:    if you don't want to use that...    just run a 8ga. or 10ga. wire to the battery.

I would vote for an internal regulator and be done with it :Twocents:
Interesting though, my brother has the same question.  :popcrn:
I would think you would need the main original charging circuit to power the car, and then another 10g to charge the battery

I am going to get rid of the original regulator, and just run the internal on the Denso...

I already did the AMP meter bypass as outlined in the MADelectric walk through. I guess I need to do the Alternator first as needed and then add the MSD on top of all this.. haha!!  the Stupid Ballest Resister, two wire key on/engine run BS they did on these old cars is a mind melt for me right now.. sheesh!

hell - at that point I'd be tempted to make my own harness and return / sell the new one you have   haha

you'll keep the oil pressure, water temp, and the run circuit...         Thats how my whole rewire started        :2thumbs:

I was thinking of doing just that, haha I believe I got this thing figured out, I am going to try and tuck the new harness into the looming so it can be returned to stock if needed.  Thanks folks!

I heard its best to use the orig. points wiring harness to run 6A box..  :shruggy:

I can see why they say that, it is just a one wire splice into the ballest resistor for the "ON" signal on the MSD box, The rest of the wireing is layed over the original harness, and does not cut into anything.

Hudson Hornet !

I don't mean to hijack this thread, but I am ready to do something similar.  I have a new 68 harness, an msd 6al and a newer external regulator. Here are my questions: 1: Can I remove the ballast resistor entirely and just connect the wires that go to the resistor together? , and 2: I would like to run the msd unit seperately from the wiring harness. Are there any more mods I need to make?  Thanks in advance for the help!
