Water pump question?

I have a 68 Dodge Charger and am putting in a 440 engine from a 77 New yorker. I have to change the water pump housing back to the 68 so I can get the correct rad for the hose to fit on the drivers side. Therefore, I have to also change the power steering pump back to the 68 because the water pump hose will not fit with the 77. So I bought an aluminum water pump & housing and there are 2 top ports on the old pump housing that looks like vacuum lines go to them. Does anyone know what they are for? One has a 2 hose plug and the other has 3. See pics. The alum housing has one bigger hole that neither sensor will fit in. Do I need to put these back in the new one?

Those are "vacuum trees" used with emissions equipment that your '68 doesn't have, just remove them and replace them with 1/2" NPT plugs.
Pardon me but my karma just ran over your dogma.

There was some issues with the alluminum 440 source water pump housing that had smaller ports than what the factory cast iron pieces had and people were having issues with over heating due to the casting flaw.  There was a thread on it but I can't seem to find it right now.

This one? http://www.dodgecharger.com/forum/index.php/topic,60599.0.html

Yup, that was the one.  I guess it helps when you type the word "source" into the search field correctly so it finds the correct spelling of the word.  Oh well, at least someone found it. :2thumbs:

Like I said, I'm not the brightest star in the sky sometimes.  Plus it helps if I type correctly.  Couldnt find much spelling the word source as "suorce".  In the words of Denis Leary..... Im an asshole... and Im proud of it!

KUDOS to you and Piston Freddy for seeing that water pump housing! I would have never guessed there was an overheating issue with a brand new housing & pump! I checked into that and the lower ports are not as wide as the stock housing, but I can still get a finger down to the bottom. I called the co. I bought it from and they said they never had a return on their housing for an overheating issue. I don't know if it's because they don't sell the defective ones, or the buyers just don't know that their water pump housing is the cause of their overheating issues! I will need to take a second look at the radius to see if the flow is restricted 20-30% like was mentioned in the thread posted.
I think from now on, I need  to ask which parts to buy BEFORE I order anything else! This site is VERY helpful and I would be lost without the advice given here!
Thanks!
Sid

One thing I have learned over the years from customizing cars is that if it ain't broke, don't fix it and try to reinvent the wheel.  If it was good enough to work for the factory which mass produced these cars, then it should be good enough for me.  There are exceptions of course where technology has improved on a certain part, such as the solid state instrument cluster voltage limiter, electronic ignition, and radial tires just to name a few.
