383 attached to 727 on my 69, looked like after driving the back of the oil pan gasket was out and it was leaking oil and blowing it on the open tourque converter when it was going down the road, then of course we thought maybe the rear main went out.. although the motor was out of car not long ago and belive the rear main was changed. So went out today jacked car up to see if oil was dripping from rear of pan and leaks or drips. I re-tourqued the bolts and most on the oil pan were very loose. I tightened down and drove the car and it seemed to not leak! I drove it hard the mile home just to check and it at home in garage no leak! Thinking great oil pan gasket bolts needed tourqing. So I change the oil, filter and take it back down the road seems to be running great. Get home and look under the car and guess what leaking oil at the rear of the oil pan and tourque converter?? Now I really dont know and just hoping its not the rear main cause we all know alot of work involved in that.. Is there a sure way to check and see if the rear main?? Thanks for the help guys from a very frustrated charger owner...

I thought I had the same problem with my engine but it turned out to be a leaking rocker cover gasket. Right at the back on the passenger side. Dripped down behind where you can see and ended up looking like a leaky rear main.
Put some better gaskets on and it no longer leaks.
Gotta love a '69

Yup. could be at the top somewhere.

I discovered a leak around the threads of the rear two oil pan bolts by overfilling my pan with 8 quarts (pre-start leak check) The thread holes in the rear main seal cap are open and I should have sealed them. Had I driven the car, it would have blown the oil around and made it look like a main seal or gasket leak.

I'll have to re-inspect the top and back of motor tonight, the only reason I fear the worst is after driving the car and getting up under it there is oil collecting (not alot) but enough in the bell housing area that looks to be maybe coming from the rear seal area or dripping down.. If so I guess I will do some research on how to change the rear main seal out..

Don't forget the oil pressure sender, they're known to leak and wind up dripping from the bellhousing area.
Pardon me but my karma just ran over your dogma.

I had an oil leak that dripped from the rear of the sump, turned out to be the timing chain cover leaking, down by the sump. Oil was blown round the sump gasket area and collected at the back before it dripped.
