Autocrossing possible oil starvation?

Hello,

I was thinking about auto crossing the charger this fall. More as a joke than anything, without disc brakes, sway bars, or the 3.91 rear end, it will be pretty pitiful. Mainly I wanted to go out, have a good time and let everyone hear the 440 uncorked. However I just thought about the possibility of starving the motor of oil during the hard cornering.

Do you think this is a legitimate problem, or will the lack of sway bars coupled with the 205 mm wide walmart specials that I have for (fun tires) keep the corning forces so low that I wouldn't have to worry about it.

I have attached my friends video of the track so you can see what the charger would be facing.

I don't think it will be a problem.   I have run my street Superbird hard at Road America and never had an issue.   With the stock package, as long as you have oil in it, you should be fine.

You can buy oil accumulators to fix this very problem,

as to whether or not you actually need one I dont know, most probably not

also some racers fit baffles in their oil pans

All the reading I've done over the years says baffles are a required Mod. to combat oil starvation especially in these types of hijinks. Long steady high speed passes in a real Hi-Po car like a Superbird might not be an issue, but with a typical  daily driver type vehicle you might actually break something, motor mount for example, but oil starvation or such might really be a problem. Sounds like great fun and a good way to test the limits of your Charger. Bring a tripple A card and a tool kit.  Please take lots of photos and maybe even post a Video to you tube.  :2thumbs: Most of all be prepared for the unexpected.  :yesnod:

I have a '70 Challenger set up for some serious handling. Big swaybars, big torsion bars, low profile tires. I don't have a baffled pan but I do have a windage tray. If I'm on a winding road there is no problem. But, if I'm on a continuous tight sweeping curve at speed , like an on-ramp my oil pressure will start to fluctuate. I don't think you would have a problem auto crossing like what's in the video since you will be constantly accelerating, turning, and slowing down. I'm not saying your oil pan is safe, I'm just thinking you'll be limited enough by the tires and lack of sway bars that you'll back out before the engine does. :D

For example here is a pic of the oil pan pick up tube baffle & windage scraper I made for my small block.

Probably no big deal with autocross.  Small turns, short duration.  Something like a road course may require one.  The team from Rocket Restorations ran an Accusump in their '67 Fury Chumpcar.  Those are mostly 2.5 mile courses.  The Chevy V8s had oil problems and liked to blow up.

Consider also that with the small-tired stock setup, you won't be outside the factory tested bounds of the system. I doubt that you are going to have a problem, but I would connect a mechanical oil pressure gauge and keep a good eye on it if you're concerned. You could also install a relay in the ignition feed circuit tied to an oil pressure switch so the ignition gets cut if you lose pressure. Don't forget to install a bypass button too so you can start the engine.

My friend build a 77 vett with a 383 and 4 speed for autocross. He hasn't ran it much for this very issue. He said he could just watch his oil pressure gauge drop on some of the turns. I think he ended up getting an accusump or something like that.
