Looks like they had a couple of different engines in the Mustang.

The Mustang in the video definately had a different sound at idle than the Spitfire.

Somebody can correct me...but the early Mustang was just so-so...until it got the Rolls-Royce/Merlin engines..those coupled with a great airframe made them the fantastic fighter palne they were.

The Chrysler Hemi first appeared in a P-47. Sadly the war ended before the engine could be brought into full production.

Yes, the Merlin engine made the p-51 the outstanding fighter of it's day.

 Best engine + the most advanced wing = the best Pursuit and Escort of the war.  

The early mustang was not a good high altitude interceptor which is what the Brits needed to stave off the German Bomber threat, but the all new mustang was a much better airframe then the old P-40s which were what the Brits were getting from US and were better suited as well for ground attack. High altitude performance was an emerging need and un-supercharged The -51 wasn't really ready to rock and roll for the battle of Britain. In fact it was initally used a recon and ground attack plane with a fairly light armament,... finally...  the USArmyACorp realized six 50 Cals and drop tanks in & on everything would get the job done.
 I've collected a couple Photos of the early Mustangs, I'll scan and post them up later.

I have always been fascinated with the WWII aircraft and built many balsa models when I was a kid including one Spitfire.  Summer of '93 I was looking for something to do and walked into a HobbyTown and bought a Great Planes P-51 Mustang R/C kit, retracts, bottom dump muffler and spent a year or more building it in my spare time.  Its first flight in '94 was pretty awesome, flew straight as an arrow with a couple little tweaks after the first time up.  It hasn't been in the air since '95 mostly because it was the first R/C plane I built and I would be sad to break it, but maybe its time to dust it off .

I'm not saying we don't need correct grammar or anything and Lord knows I'm one that could use some help, but if we're going to start correcting everyones grammar around here many of us are screwed.




I will admit that there have been a few come along that even bothered me with no punctuation or at least breaking up their post into paragraphs. Some of those are just hard to read.

I love WWII aircraft !

I've been to many museums, but the best is in my backyard at Boeing field in Seattle. Many WWII fighters on display including:

P51 Mustang
ME 109
P38
Zero
Spitfire
Warhawk
Corsair
Thunderbolt
and Yak

Not to mention all of the WWI planes and a hundreds of others including Migs, Blackbird, etc. etc.  Incredible collection.
