What is involved in changing out a 69's head light switch?

I believe the factory procedure is to pull the cluster, disconnect the wiring, disconnect the vacuum hoses, remove the two mounting scews and then reverse to install the new one.

If your car is non-A/C ? I can be done fairly easily with cluster inplace.

yea...I have done mine a couple of times with cluster in place

twodko

That is good to know because my car is a non A/C car. I squirted some contact cleaner in the switch yesterday then blew the residue out with an air hose. I suspect, since they worked fine before paint, that body shop dust may have found its way into the switch. Thanks guys.

Do you just pull the plate off the instrument panel to access the switch?

no , its all switches are accessed from the back of the cluster

you  really need to  remove the cluster ,

This can be done without removing the cluster. Why risk scrathing the column , the faceplates or the pads? Its just a matter of 3 screws (one more on a 69 than a 70 cause of the vac. switch) and its done . A little tricky to position your head just right to see the screws but worth it IMHO.

:iagree:
I took the switch out of my charger with the cluster in place, also did it on my friends 69 Super Bee.
There is not allot of space, but no big problem :Twocents:

,  but thinking if you have never removed one before , you can see how they go ! & how the vacuum part !! metal  clips hold it to the switch !! ( rather than just fiddling around  might make connections weaker & stuff ) :Twocents:
i think its just as easy , lower the steering column  a little   , reach up disconect the speedometer cable , pull cluster forward , then tilt it down , place a cloth over steering column ,  stop scratches , just be carefull of amp gauge wiring  connections , might need undoing before you can pull the  cluster out , to disconect the rest of the multi plugs & bulb holders etcetc  & lay it flat  ,
just find it easier that way,  :yesnod: :Twocents:

oh disconect battery first  :yesnod:

Good point!
when I took  my switch out I diden't know how to remove the cluster, so I thought I will try to remove it from under the dash, and it vent well except skratched hands..
so when I had to change switch in the Bee I did it the way I knew.

I did mine 2 months ago and took me about 30 minutes to take out the old one and put in a replacement one.
