That's a 62 Glaxie 500 XL.  The 1/2 years with Ford started in 63-1/2 when they did the fastback version.  Is it a B-code or a G-code?  The G-Code is the tripower 405HP version.  B-code is the 385HP 4bbl version.  I don't think it is a factory lightweight.  If it is a factory lightweight model, it would have been built at the Atlanta, GA facility as all were.   It will have a rubber floor mat (no carpet), no insulation, the door panels will not have armrests, and the front end will feature aluminum bumpers, and more than likely it'll be a heater/radio delete too.  Check the engine code, check the assembly plant.  But I do see armrests, a radio, and a heater.  So I'm thinking it's not a lightweight.  NICE FIND THOUGH!!!!!!!!! :2thumbs: :2thumbs: :2thumbs:

OK: Thanks RR, any more info or links always appreciated...  :yesnod:
What little i know about galaxies starts in '63, i was sure there were earlier year and a half editions and not performance related either but mid-Yr.  trim upgrades because the sales number battles between the top three full sizes were so intense... Thanks again.

Brock, please PM me the VIN.    My Ford guru friend says you have found some good stuff.

http://www.supercars.net/cars/1817.html

Sold as part of the Ellis Collection at Dana Mecum's 2009 Original Spring Classic Auction for $150,000 USD. Described as "By mid-year 1962, the powers at Ford fully recognized that in spite of the fact that their cars were performing well, they were still at a great weight disadvantage. It was bad enough that the GM offerings were lighter than the Fords, but the Chrysler products with their uni-body construction were in a different league while remaining in the same class. In an effort to gain equality, the construction of approximately 11 cars for drag-racing competition was ordered.

These 11 cars began life as 1962 Galaxie two-door sedans that were manufactured at Ford's Wayne, Michigan, assembly plant. Vehicle identification numbers indicated that all were August 1962 produced "G" code 406/405 equipped. Lacking a sound deadener and seam sealers, the cars were delivered to the Experimental Vehicles Garage for additional modifications.

Fitted with aluminum front bumpers, fiberglass front fenders and trunk lids, the "lightweights" shed hundreds of pounds. Inside the car's accessories such as the radio and heater were eliminated. Lighter bucket-style seats replaced the stock bench.

These special vehicles were delivered to the following racers Dick Brannan, Jerry Harvey; Phil Bonner (two cars, the second of which, this 1962 Galaxie lightweight 2W51G156035, was that car as a replacement for the heavily damaged first one he received.) Ed Martin For, Tasca Ford, Gas Ronda, Les Ritchey, Bob Ford, Jim Price and Jerry Alderman. Ownership of the cars was transferred to the respective racer for the sum of a dollar, thus relieving Ford Motor Company of any liability.

These cars, from a Ford sponsorship level had a relatively short career. This was verified by the famous racer (and 1962 recipient) Gas Ronda that stated he was pleased with the car's performance, but lamented the late delivery stating, "By the time we got the 1962 lightweights it was already time to start working on the 1963 cars." Many of these 62 lightweights frames ended up under 1963 bodies."

What's odd to me on that car is the gold interior/blue ext.  Don't remember any of those combos.

The lightweights were white I believe. That would go with the gold...

Hello Guys , Thanks Brock Samson for inquiring about some info on my old Ford... Ok so far I know the car is not an XL or a 500 but it is a base model Club coupe galaxie, it is not a Lightweight but it is a G code 406, Tri-power, 4spd, 4:11 car, the question that no one can seem to answere is that this untouched car that has been sitting in a garage for the last 43 years since the original owner died in 1968 has what appears to be lightweight seats and a rubber floor  matt that are 100% original to this car yet it has a heater, radio, clock and a Dashpad,  and it also has a 6 digit dso number which from what I am told will explain everything once we find someone who can decode it....   Thanks for the help...

Aero426

What is the DSO number?  I have someone who may be able to help.

Chevysrule

Aero, the DSO # is 130649
Thanks for checking....

I've just copied Ford expert John Craft who is a member of this board.    John had also asked for the VIN.   If you'd care to share it, please PM me.

Awesome!

My Dad raced one just like it around Detroit in the early '60s. I don't remember much and have no photos, but the car was very similar-he'd have liked a lighweight, but couldn't get one so made or ordered one like you have here. IIRC it had dual quads and poked the 11's a couple times, to everyone's amazement.

Last night I actually got a phone call about this car from a local Ford nut that knows this car very well, I guess the guy is for real and pretty well known in the ford world as he currently owns quite a collection of rare Hi-po Fords... My info on the orig owner was misinformation as the owner died within the last 10 years at 90yrs old but verified that the car had been sitting in the orig owners garage since 1968 with the motor apart and he wasnt aware that the guy even died let alone the fact that the car had been sold off for scrap as he hadnt been to the guys house in about 5 years, which is about the time my friend got a phone call  from one of his sons friends asking him if he would come tow a junk car out  of his  deceased fathers garage, my friend was told it was a 4dr 65 Galaxie with no engine..... Lucky!!!!... the Local Ford nut said he has been trying to buy this car since 1969 when it first got stashed away in its hidden tomb.....  he actually became quite friendly with the original owner over the years and learned a lot about this car and also verified that the lightweight interior is factory installed in this car ,the original owner was a very persistant fellow and back then if you wanted it and were willing to pay,you would get it as I guess the owner refused to buy a Ford if he didnt get a lightweight interior with an XL dash in this particuliar car ... so  mystery is solved and I am supposed to meet with Ford nut sometime this weekend .....  kind of a new experience for me because I have always been a Mopar/Chevy fan but have always said if I ever get a Ford its gonna be a 63-64 427 car but this 62 406 car is a great second best to me as the minute I seen it I knew this was the Ford I had been waiting for.....

I've read a little about the pontiac lightweights around the same time and I've seen some bubble top 409s 409 409... sorry.. but that's not really my era as I didn't start reading the Mags till '66 about the time i saw my first HEMI GTX. I guess the introduction of the compacts and mid-sizers in the industry was a God send to drag racers as the HP wars progressed. and then here comes the RAMCHARGERS changing the wheel base. And the AFX class.
A very exciting time to be buying models. 409,.. 409...  :shruggy:

Hi Ken,

I have your 67 Galaxie and the car is still running fine!

Aero426

John Craft (C5HM) posted this thread on the FE Ford board (thanks John).

http://www.network54.com/Forum/74182/message/1303005190/Mystery+1962+Galaxie

As you have been told, it's not a light weight Galaxie.   Still a very nice rare find of course, and those particular seats are a very hard to find option.    The six digit DSO could account for the special bucket seat installation.   Glad you got information on the car from your end.

Chevysrule

Thanks Aero I appreciate that, I applied for a membership on the site as I see a few questions I can answere regarding this car, This car DOES have a rubber floormat  and the Trim code IS blank on the data plate....
