Advice on a 400 motor..

Just wondering...is the 400 motor the same design/dimensions as a 440? Can I drop one in my car to replace my 440 or is there a lot of modification? My car is a 4 speed.

There is one for sale and it seems pretty good...but...

It's a straight swap, but consider that the exhaust will be 1/2" to 3/4" lower. If you have headers they could hit torsion bars or steering boxes.

The 400 is the same size as the old skool 350-361-and 383...No, it isn't the same size as the 440 in cubic inches or width of the engine..


I wouldn't swap the baddest 400 on the planet for the 440 RB engine, as it lends itself to stroker kits and many more cubic inches..

I was thinking about a quick swap while I rebuild my 440. I have since found out also that they are externally balanced also, so I would have to change the flywheel...it sounds like more trouble than it's worth for temp install.

make sure the internal or external balancing is the same when swapping a 400 for a 440 ?

   You will most likely have issues with the pilot bearing/bushing as the 400 crank is not finished bored or even drilled in some cases. There are 400's out there that had four speeds behind them, kind of rare. Those 400's had forged cranks and would be a bolt in for the most part. Grumpy
