I found this 8 3/4 on my local CL. It has 2.76 gears. He says it is a sure grip. Only $300.

I really need to get the 3.91's out. They are klilling me! Cruising to Vegas was the real test. The 3.91's are good for hole shots, terrible for a weekend cruiser. Is this a decent price for a loaded 8 3/4 diff? I know It is going all the way to other side. Would it be a mistake to pick this up and try it?

Not a bad price considering it's a good power lock.   Just check which U joint yoke it has... 7260 or 7290.    It would have helped pay for itself on a long trip like that!

Good suregrip 3.23s are going upwards of $500 around my neck of the woods.

Yeah, it's a good price - as long as it's in good condition. However, if you just want gears for long trips then skip the Sure Grip and just get an open 2.76/2.94/3.23. I see them all the time for $50-75. Your off-the-line performance will suck any way so why spend the extra money? What you want is to find the right gear to keep your engine around the torque peak at cruise so if you've tweaked the cam you may want something higher (numerically) than stock.

Sarcasm detector, that's a real good invention.
