I am in the process of restoring my horns for my 69 Charger.  Which would be the correct color that they came from the factory with?  Semi flat black or gloss black?  I am leaning more towards the semi flat.

Thanks for your input.

I used Eastwood's under hood black. It is similar to the semi flat or satin black.

Can you sandblast the horns prior to priming and painting?

Is it imperative that you don't blast the inner section?  I was thinking of stuffing a small swatch of cloth in there prior to putting the horns in the sandblaster.

Correct or need I not worry?

All I did with mine today was use Aircraft stripper to get the old paint off which was chipped up pretty bad.  What was left was minimal rust that just brushed off with a wire wheel.  Unless yours are pretty badly rusted, I would just paint strip and repaint.

Same.

Wire wheeled it first.

gloss black.

Stuff a paper towel or similar down in them and glass bead them.

I've done several this way with never a problem

:iagree:

They weren't a true 100% high gloss black, but rattle can gloss black (Duplicolor, Krylon, etc) is a great match. Semi-gloss/satin or underhood black is too dull.

I blasted my horns today and thought I'd share this method of plugging I came up with. I wanted the wad as far down as possible but didn't want the hassle of trying to fish it out. So basically I just put a zip tie around the paper shop towel before I shoved it in so I could easily pull it right back out. It worked quite well.

Thanks. I forgot to mention that I shoved the towel down in there with a wrench or screwdriver (I forget) but it was jammed way down about as far and tight as it would go.

FYI, you will get some media past the paper towel so if you want it sealed off perfectly you might need to wrap the bundle in plastic or something.

Also, which horn goes where? Does "high" go on top?

MRCHARGER

Use Bull's method just replace cloth with black foam window insulator 1"x1/2" cut to size, stuff down to deepest corner. When done blasting, use a part painting hook to pull out the foam. Lightly tap and rotate horn to pour out any media that may have gotten past. Test horn on battery, and again rotate out the remaining media. Spray with wax and grease remover (prepall), let dry and paint with krylon gloss black.

Bull,
if you look at the picture I posted above, they will only go on one way and still point downwards to keep water and debris out of them.

Ok, that makes sense. I hadn't tried to test fit them yet. :2thumbs:

This is about 5 years late, but there might be a few folks out there that want to paint theirs yet.

Mine don't need painting, and here is what they looked like after cleaning.

I'd go with a semi-gloss.
