Instructions says clearly CUT THE OUTER EDGE of the line but...

THEY ARE NOT ON RIGHT SCALE... I DID GRIND PARTIALLY THE VALVE SEAT BECAUSE THEY ARE BIGGER!!!!

:pullinghair: :pullinghair: :pullinghair: :pullinghair: :pullinghair: :pullinghair:

( will need to fit a valve seat there now )

I think is better cuting templates on INNER part of the line and could work.

Honestly once you note how are they and understand the work making it, you don't need templates... maybe just a couple of them, the verticals and horizontals at least

note: I think will need another heads, one section was deeply grinded. I hope both vendors I know still have the NOS ones they had ( one each both 452s ). Also noticed both heads have at least on one exhaust each, rusted/pited areas on seats

If shipping was not a killer I have a set of 452s in the shop.

Nacho-RT74

being overseas, yes, is killer. Thanks anyway.

DAMN!!! PORT HEADS IS REALLY SCARY! already began on one of the NOS heads, and is very IMPRESSIVE how thin is the exhaust valve seat area... maybe just one milimeter ( barelly )? Does sound that good ?. It is also confusing since the exhaust port it looks to have 3 or maybe 4 angled cuts and grinding I'm cutting the 3rd angle making allmost a verticall wall to match the bowl/roof surface and smooth run.
I used a little bit of grinding grease to slightly mark the valve seat to at least be sure about the seat valve area.

Definitelly, Mopar templates doesn't match somehow. If I have to follow AND TRUST this templates SPECIALLY on exhaust port, will be cutting completelly the valve seat ( again ) and I already made the cut on template allmost eliminating the line of the shape

IN FACT, trying to achieve the template area, I'm already slightly grinding in some cases the valve seat inner edge, not badly, but maybe touching.

I'm afraid could be making something wrong. I have fear to ruin this head too even I have read and look at pics of this kind of jobs.

Intake valve area is easier and closer to templates, althought still not perfect match, but nothing to worry really.

Something looks quite diff and definitelly far away from this view of the template fitting in to the valve area:

Something diff to consider being 452s ?

one note more... get 6" shank carb grinders was a mistake, I should got 4". 6" ones are harder to drive and thats what has helped me to make some of the mistakes.

Did you stop to think that MP templates might just be set up for porting with 1.81 and 2.14 valves installed Nacho?? Stock 1.740 valves might be a little too small for the templates....

Good point.  One of D.Vizard's articles pointed out that a 70 degree bowl cut (below the 45/60 seat cuts) removed nearly the same material as the templates.  With a little bowl cleanup he said the bowl cut flowed equal to the templates, maybe better depending on how exact the template work was done.
Phil

Nacho-RT74

it says made for 2.08 and 1.74 :shruggy:

what I'm making is removing material from 45 seat cuts toward inside and making practically a vertical wall up to bowl/roof areas. Took a pic but didn't came out nice ( cell phone pic )

valve seat will need a slight touch up though... it's a very thin line and hard to be exact with 6" shanks!!!!! will take the heads to a machine shop to recut the 45º seat a little bit. This will enlarge the valve seat area to outside, then will make a small 60º cut to refinish the inner side/line of the seat.

I used those templates for my 70 383 Sport Satellite years ago, I followed the instructions to the LETTER, and when I got to run it for the first time, I was SICK! It was way better when it was STOCK. I wasn't running a pulling truck motor, and wasn't spinning it at 7000 RPM's! I just wanted to sneak a little more out of it! The only was to do that was different heads. I won't be doing that to my 69's 383!

Nacho-RT74

did you made to fit the templates up to seats ( specially exhaust ) ? if I make it will be eating completelly the seats!!!!

dunno if actually the print out is out of real scale

I'd port match, smooth up any imperfections, smooth radius's, and then call it done. Throw those templates in the garbage. They want you to hog out so much, and that kills port velocity. Porting is a science, and unless those templates could be made 3 dimensional, I feel that they can't really come close. Should you continue using these, be sure to CC the ports when you are done, to check for equal CC's.
Those templates do want you to get into the seats, but when I did mine, I stopped below the seats, and just made nice raduis's up to them.

Yep, the throat cut beneath the seat with a quick bowl blend will do the same job as the templates.  :2thumbs:
