Hey guys, I'm new to the site and just want to introduce myself and my Charger.  I'm JT and I've got a 1969 Charger that I've inherited from my Father.  It's not in perfect shape, but for one that's been sitting for 20+ years, it seems alright to me!  The car was originally bought by my Great Uncle's Father on January 29th, 1969.  Bought from him by his son, my great uncle in 1972 and then bought by my Father in 1995.  It wasn't running when it was brought to the house and has been sitting at the end of the driveway since then.  The tags have 1988 stickers on them, so I figure it was last running in late 87/early 88.

The Charger is an original black car that had a gunmetal vinyl top.  383 magnum 4bbl and a 727auto tranny.  Air conditioning, center console and bucket seats.

It's definitely got some rust and needs some work, but I'm going at it one step at a time to see how far I can get with it.  I've recently within the past week or so sanded all the rust spots down and sprayed it with primer.  Cleaned up the interior a little bit and put it up on jack stands.  Some used tires that hold air are the next items on my list.  I'd just like to get it up off the rims.  I remember when I was a kid that the tires had air in them sitting in our driveway, so I know it hasn't been but maybe 10 years that it has been sitting on flats.

Here are a couple pictures so you can see what state it's in.  I'm trying to take a picture every time after I do something to the car so I'll have somewhat of a record of my shadetree restoration ha.

I've been to a lot of different site's looking for info on Chargers and what I've found is that this is the place to be.  I'm just wanting to talk to, share stories, and share my Chargers story with some guys that really appreciate what the 69 Charger is.  From what I've been reading, this is the place to do that.

Welcome

Like you said take it one step at a time.

Primer will not do anything to prevent rust, you need to seal the bare metal even a crappy spray paint is better than nothing.

Primer over the rust spots.  I did the entire roof.  not a professional primer job, but hopefully it will have stopped some of that rust!

Hello and welcome.
looking at the pictures, that car needs a ton of work (and AMD sheetmetal) but how cool would it be to keep and restore a car that was family property for over 40 years....
Greetings from Belgium, the beer country

NOS is nice, turbo's are neat, but when it comes to Mopars, there's no need to cheat...

G'day mate.
It can be a little daunting at first when you get your hands on a car that needs a lot of work.
Persevere though and you will be blessed with a car that many less fortunate than us would kill for.
All the best with your project.

WELCOME to the forum!!! Looks like you have a great project car to start with. You've found a terrific resource here for help & info.
Can't say I've ever heard of a factory gray top before on a '69?? Is that legit??  :scratchchin:

Bill,

I seem to recall a white 69 r/t that had a black tail stripe and a gray vinyl top.  I think gray was one of the rarer colors as I have only seen 2 or 3 of them over the years.  Two were white paint and I think one was black.

EDIT - well, I just double checked my 1969 Dodge Dealers Data book and it does not list gray in there.  Not to say that it was not a late addition or anything as we all know when it comes to Mopar, you can never say never!

Welcome to the site! You've got some big pluses with your car from what I can see ie:

Both bumpers appear to be in great shape including bumpettes.

The tail light lens and bezels appear to be in good condition.

The grille on that car looks to be very good with no big issues, the trim looks good too
and I can't see any damage.

Good on you!

Hello to everyone and thank you for the welcoming!  I really appreciate it!  It's nice to become part of a community of some knowledgeable Mopar fans!  Thank you for the comments on my Charger.  I will always take and appreciate any and all input towards the bettering of or preservation of this car!

greenpigs - I've taken your advice and went to Autozone today and bout some black spray paint to hit what I've already primered on the car.  Makes sense now that I think about it.. that primer not sealing anything in, but just giving a better surface to the paint to stick to.  Thank you for your input!!

tan top - My plans for this restoration is to get it as close to stock and I can.  I want to ride around in that car and it be just like it was back in 1974 when my Dad was riding shotgun with my Uncle driving down the back streets of East Nashville!

six-tee-nine - I agree. I believe the car needs quite a bit of work too.  A new quarter, lower quarter, door patches, patches around where the Roof and Trunk meet, and possible a door shell.. along with a floor pan or two!  Not to mention all of the other unseen problems.  Just like greenpigs confirmed though... one step at a time lol.  It'll be well worth my effort to me just to hear the engine start up!

bill440rt   -  Thank you sir! It's great to be here.  I went outside and took a double look at the Fender Tag on my Charger and low and behold, V1X.  I thought it sounded weird it being a gray top car also because every story I've ever heard about this Charger is that it had a BLACK top.  That it was a "triple black" car.  So, leave it to me to write something down wrong and stir a gray top craze haha.  But, yes, I was wrong.  It is an original BLACK top car.

Thank you to everyone else who took the time to post on this topic!  It's great to feel welcome and to be amongst other Charger fans! Or should I say connoisseurs?

I will post up more pictures and some more information about the car later this afternoon.

So its been about 20 minutes and I'm already back on here to post some pictures.  I just went outside and took these so they're as fresh as they get! I hope ya'll enjoy!!

Here are some pictures of the INTERIOR.  The cloth in between the vinyl on the seats is so old that it will split if your not careful (found that one out the hard way :/. )   But, for whats been done to it, or not done.. I think it looks great!  And that's an FM converter above the console/below the dash by the way.

The engine bay.  383 with a 4bbl Holley.  I took the carb off a couple years ago and had it rebuilt thinking that might encourage my Dad to put some effort into it.  But, it didn't work.  The carb is still sitting in the garage with a towel over it and the engine has a rag down in the intake with the air filter sitting on top of it.

I went to clean out the engine bay the other day and found a whole NEST of brown recluse spiders living in, on and around that white rag that I stuffed in the intake manifold.  Sucked them up with a vacuum and haven't seen another one since.  I do, however, keep my eye out for them while I'm working on The Charger now ha.

No battery, took it out a couple days ago.  Had probably been in there about 7 or 8 years.  The water you see on the right is sitting in the tray that the battery was sitting in. (which has some kind of OLD oil can or coffee can up under it... for support for the battery??)

Yep a factory triple black Charger is a sweet combo & even more of a reason to go back stock.

Not sure on your budget but I would do one body panel at a time starting with the doors. They are the easiest to remove & get behind to work the dents out or replace as the one looks a little crunched. Plus it will help you get up too speed on hammer &  dolly work for the rest of the car, but the drivers quarter will need replaced.

Still as long as you don't rush yourself & stay focused on getting one thing done at a time before starting on something else you will see results.

Why was it not running when it got parked?

I guess seeing if it will turn over is a start. BEFORE trying to turn it over change the oil & any filters & pulling the gas tank & having it cleaned may be a good idea. Then I would swap out the spark plugs but before putting them back in turn the motor over by hand with a breaker bar.

Welcome to the site!  Nice project and great history.  :2thumbs:  Good luck getting it underway!

XP29H9

Alright well I've done a little bit more work.  Nothing too serious or anything.. just busy work.  Today consisted of taking all of the hubcaps off as well as the front two wheels.  Behind the hubcaps proved to be another nesting spot for the brown recluse spiders and a black widow, so I sprayed them all down with an alcohol based wasp killer.  Then I rinsed all of the hubcaps and the two wheels with the water hose until they seemed to be spider and bug spray free and sat them in the sun to dry.  Next, I used some Blue Magic polish on the hubcaps to shine them up a bit.

Not too hard of a job.  I just like seeing stuff like chrome and polished aluminum get its shine back!! ;D

So, here are a couple more pictures... a group shot of the hubcaps before and after and a single shot before and after.  A side shot of what the car looks like now and a front grill shot.. with the headlights open!

daveco  -  Thanks for the info man!  I was wondering why something like that would be in that spot. And I guess I've never really thought about it, but I haven't really seen those vinyl/cloth buckets in but maybe one or two chargers I've seen.  The cloth looks blue now.  I wonder if it was black originally?  resq302?

tan top  -  I have NOT looked for a broadcast sheet behind the rear seat.  I'm really just not quite sure how to get that back seat off or if I'm going to be able to get it back together once I do get it off.  But, it has been on my mind.  If I do end up getting out, I'll be sure and post a picture or two!   :thumbs up:

BigBlockSam   -   I truly believe it won't be too hard to get that motor running.  Supposedly it was rebuilt or refurbished about 600miles before it was parked right before my Great Uncle died.  I took off the valve covers a couple years ago and everything still looked like it was all oiled and greased up to me.  So, maybeee the engine won't be completely locked up.  I've got a friend who's an older Mopar fanatic himself who's supposed to come over and see what we can do with it.  I've unbolted the fan shroud so I can get to the crank bolt.  I'm just waiting on a socket and a bar to find out if she's locked up or not! .... Also, I think there may have been a problem with the starter at some point.  There was a mechanics ignition ran in through the corner window and just layed on the dash in front of the steering wheel.  That's how the car was started for the longest time (or so the story goes.)  I've been told that may be a regulator problem in the starter and I may need a new starter.  Fact or not I don't know.....  I do know that in about 1997, by Dad and his friend were out there trying to get The Charger started one night and they hooked up two batteries to it and got it to turn over, but not start.

Just 6T9 CHGR   -   Wow!  Thank you for that information and for taking the time to do that!  It's absolutely great to have that Fender Tag code readout in its entirety!!  I came across your site (1969chargerregistry.com) in the same night that I found this one!  You've got some great information on there!  Also, I sent you an email to Admin@ with all the registry information in it!  Thanks for your help and I'm glad to be a part of your registry!

greenpigs   -   Definitely agree with you on going stock.  That's always been the plan for that car in my Dad's mind, and I carry that same dream in my own.  I don't have any kind of budget to go along with this restoration.  I just kinda started doing what I could to it to preserve it in hopes of getting it started soon.  The body work is definitely on the list, but my wallet will regulate when and how much I can do haha.  I'm not sure if it wasn't running or had a problem when it was parked.  I just assume that it was running (could get it started) when my uncle was alive, and was parked when he died.  From what I've been told, it was in great shape up until the last couple years of his life.  I think the few spots that are messed up on the car are from him getting drunk and driving it or backing into things.

Much thanks to everyone else's welcomes!  It's great to be here!  I'm really enjoying all the reading and sharing going on!

Ah, the re-awakening after a long winters nap!

Yes, chances are the cloth seat inserts started out as black and faded to the blue over the years.  I know a lot of the repro carpets do the same thing.  The hub caps also look to be in very nice condition with no dents or dings.  There is some areas that will probably need to be repainted on the as I think the center medallion was red if I remember correctly.

Wow! That's a nicely optioned '69 you've got there. Time to start making a list, figuring out a budget, and rounding up parts!! That would be an awesome car once finished.

The black interior parts fading to blue is a common one, seat belts will do the same thing. Talk to Legendary for new covers & other interior stuff you might need.

Good luck!  :2thumbs:

Good luck with your 69! Just be careful with those jackstands on that gravel, I would lay down some wood to stablize them, you dont want them sinking into the ground and your 69 ending up falling off..........
68 Charger LL-1 Turquoise

XP29H9

Hey guys!  Thanks for all the comments and appreciation!  My Charger does seem like its slowly but surely coming back to life.  I've been doing a little bit of work, again, but nothing major.  I took qwick68's advice and put something to better stabilize those jack stand.  I figured some concrete squares might do a good job so I used them.  Wallowed out the gravel and got the squares sitting level before I put the jack stands on them.
Also, I took the two front wheels to a tire shop and just had them put on some cheap tires.  I said just something that will hold air so the car will be up off the rims.  So they matched me 2 185/65/14's to the FR75-14's that were on the rims.  They hold air great, but it sure does look like a big difference in sidewall height.  After I got them home, I sanded down the front facing of each wheel and shot them both with primer, then a coat of some rustoleum gloss black spray paint.  To me, they look great!  And it gave me something to be focused on all while adding a little bit of life to the Charger.  And yes, I took pictures.

So, I also took pictures of most of the "BAD" spots on the car.. fender corners, top/quarter seam, door dent, floor pans, trunk pan, etc.  What I'm wondering is if I should keep posting the pictures in this thread or start a new one?  I just don't know how ya'll do your posting round here  :icon_smile_cool:

resq302  -  It's definitely supposed to be red in the center of those hubcaps.  You can still see some of the paint on a few of them, but most are almost completely worn off!  I figure a professional paint job on them is in the distant future at some point.

bill440rt  -  Thanks for the compliments Sir!  And for the reference to Legendary.  I'm sure I'll be needing their help!  I'm really looking forward to seeing it all back to black again as well!

BigBlockSam  -  That's pretty cool about your roadrunner.  You can put a fully charged battery in mine and a few of the dash lights come on as well.  But that's about all she does! ha  I agree though, it really is an inspiration to keep on going!  I swear to you, I probably look at these pictures I've posted more than anyone else on here haha!  The Charger has just been a part of my life for such a long time and has been in mostly the same condition since as far as I can remember.  Now, here I've got pictures of it FINALLY getting some attention and it's really making it look a lot better!  I just love it!  I can't really explain how I feel about it, but I'm sure all of the other "car guys" out there pretty much catch my drift.

qwick68  -  Thanks for the advice!  It's most assuredly been put to use.  Those jack stand had already sunk over an inch into the ground!  It was a bad accident waiting to happen.  Not to mention damages to the car.  Fixed now for the better though, I hope!

resq302

Thanks resq302!  I'll keep that in mind for sure  :2thumbs:

Here are a few pics from what I did today.   I will post the pics of all the problematic areas either on here or in a new thread when I get the go ahead!

The revamped jack stand base:

And the freshly painted wheel with the new tire.  What are your opinions on that small sidewall?

And the pair:

Not a fan of the small sidewall tires.  They just don't look right on our cars.  Original tire size for that car was probably F70-14 like the ones I have in my avatar pic.

Much better than sitting on the rims.

I have been through a couple rim combos, my tip is keep the steel rims on the car till its done. Then get the rims you want as you may change your mind a couple times before your done & rims are not cheap most times.

I'm with you resq302.  I really wanted the new tires to be as tall as the original ones, but I went in search of a cheap tire to just roll the car around on and this is what I came out with $20 later.  The original tires were Remington FR75-14 I think.  Doesn't really matter though, because the tires on the front wheels and the ones on the back are/were two different brands anyway!  Still a taller sidewall tire though.

greenpigs  -  Agreed.  She'll be back on air and rubber again.  One step closer to the road haha.  And for a wheel choice.. if not the original hubcabs on those steel rims, then I was thinking maybe a set of 69 Rally wheels.  I've just always liked that look.

Here's a pic of what the rear wheel looks like on the car.  Original, as if the hubcap were just taken off of it.. (and the spiders wiped away, of course  :P)

Careful of those paving blocks the car/jacks are on. They break easily which wouldn't be kind to the charger or you especially if your under it.

I'd use something else in place of them  :Twocents:

What would be the best thing for me to use?  Just a square of wood or a board maybe?

resq302

Ive used plywood if it was on asphalt and if it was on loose or dirt ground, a 2x6 under the still jack.

 :iagree:

I have a couple squares of 2x12 that I keep around just for the jack stands.
Check out my full thread and progress here.

Well I've got a 2x12 in the garage that I can cut off of.  Sounds like that'll be on the "to do" list as well!  I tried to take my right rear wheel off today and it is seized up.  probably from rust.  but I took the lugs off and wiggled and beat and banged on it with a rubber mallet.  Nothin.  Liquid wrenched it twice in 5 min intervals.. beat bang.. nothin.  Im figuring wait untill a warmer day (70+) and maybe it'll come off?  It was about 50 degrees here today.

Chargers have reverse threads on one of the back wheels, i think its the passenger side?? I forgot, replaced mine along time ago  :o

greenpigs

Yep check the end of the lug, I believe it will be stamped with a L unless it was switched. No need to replace just got to remember to go other way when messing with them.
So you have a garage, is it big or deep enough to fit the Charger in?

I would make getting the car in that garage priority #1 so you might want to get tires that will hold air on the back next.

My advise is to photo document everything before you take it apart.  Then bag and tag everythiing.  And most importantly-------don't throw anything and I mean anything away.  Rusty bolts can be cleaned up.  And even if you don't reuse them, you have them for reference to know exactly what they looked like.  Clamps and hoses that are original, even though not being reused, are valuable to identify exact sizes and markings.  Also note that when you order new replacement parts they won't always look like your original.  This is important to some.
You will need to decide what kind of restoration you want to do.  Are you trying to keep it looking exactly like it came from the factory or are some deviations allowable.
You first order of business will be to get it into a stable environment and then do an overall assessment of what will be needed to accomplish the restoration.  It won't be cheap.  You can easily spend $30k.  If you decide to proceed, then comes teardown.
You have some good looking parts there.  The console looks nice as does the grill.  You have a 3-speed wiper motor.  Ms. Kim Leger that posts on here does beautiful restorations of these----you can't buy these as reproductions.  A fellow in California, name escapes me, restores the water valve on the firewall (heater hoses go to it)--you can't buy repops of those either.  Many parts you need were not available 5 years ago--they are now.  It's a journey but a fun one.  Don't get in a hurry.  Take your time and enjoy it.

Welcome!! Its cool that the car stayed in the family. You got your self a little job there, to restore. Like everyone else has said, just take your time. :2thumbs:
