What it is worth - '77 FJ-40 Hard Top

A customer has one that he want to get rid of...the Land Cruiser looks to be a typical Cali car, with zero rust. It runs great, has straight metal, all windows, and has been started every few days for the last few years. It needs weather striping, bumpers straightened, and a general freshening up. Sorry, no photos. I'm curious as I have always liked these rigs, and would make him an offer to trade for it with work. I guess I would have to join one of those Toyota Land Cruiser clubs then...

There are a few FJ collectors at work and I hear the older, pre-DEQ FJs can be worth a fair amont but I've never heard anyone brag much about the vintage you're referencing. That said they pretty much look the same as the older ones to me but again it's a matter of how much you have to deal with DEQ I would think.

I would look at it like this, compare the value of a '70 Corvette to a '77 Corvette.

I like them - but not that much! There's something to be said for good sheet metal though as they have a tendency to rust in the bed.

I had one, a 70 FJ-40 back in 75-76. Drives like a tank. Carb and dizzy were hopelessly over complicated so I put a "Manafre" (spelling?) Rochester conversion carb and a Delco converted Dizzy on the engine and man, what a difference! (The 6 cyl is basically the old Chevy "Blue Flame 6" converted to metric.) They bring strong money for what you get. If you get it cheap, flip it and get a Cherokee their much less costly and easier to maintain.
