remember watching a program  , weren't  that a B29 that was found in the ice , they rebuilt it or something where it was , but it caught fire as it was taxi-ing to taking off     this was a good few years ago ,

I watched that show too. The plane was somewhere in Arctic. They flew in new engines props & other parts & with lots of hard work, they got it running. As they were taxiing for takeoff, an auxilary generator broke loose, caught fire, and the plane burned to the ground. The ending was not what was expected & it was heartbreaking to watch. If I recall, one of the lead men got sick & later died during the rebuild.

i just love ww2 war planes. the b-29 was and still is a beautiful work of art. the b-17 was the coolest but the 29 had that were gonna kick your ass look. thanks for the post.

That was an incredible waste. And very sad for all involved.

Along the same lines, did you guys ever hear about the Glacier Girl P-38. An incredible story about how they recovered a P-38 Lightning from under 268 feet of ice. We were following along with the story at the time.

i know its sad all that time money & losing that aircraft  irreplaceable, but what the hell were they thinking !!  to try something like this !! more money than sense ! to try something like that  ! it annoyed me at the time !!  should of just dismantled it & ship back !!

Reminds me of the time not too many years ago that I organized for my father (who Piloted B-17s in WWII) to go up for one last flight in a restored B-17 Sentimental Journey they brought up to Seattle's Boeing Field. I'll never forget the look on his face after the flight when he unboarded the airplane. Priceless!

That's awesome! I did a similar thing for my father a few years back. He got a ride in a AT-6 Texan trainer. He was absolutely thrilled
