I took my replacement upper control arm by a shop to get it sand blasted, they said they'd do it for $10.  Sounds good to me, I'd be working on it for like 3 hours!   :brickwall:  So, I walk up to the front door, and they got parts and pieces of cars around.  Next to the front door is a fender, a 1968 Dodge Charger fender, I do believe!  So, I go in and talk to the guy I'd spoken with on the phone.  I ask him, "Hey does that happen to be a Dodge Charger fender out there, 1968?"  He flips through some work orders, then said "I don't know what year it is, but says here it's a Charger..."  I proceed to explain that 68 was the only year with the circular side marker... And the dude just looks at me like I'm crazy!    So, I explain that I own and am working on my 68 Charger..  He just shrugs his shoulders..  Too much information I guess.  He's a nice guy though.  I found the whole thing amusing.  Kind of cool that I got someone close working on a Charger too.  I considered leaving my name, or a DC.com note...  Check this out though, my wife thought I was crazy and shook her head when I said I was thinking of doing that.. Called me a Stalker!  What the heck!    :flame:

Any who, I thought it was a funny story.

I find it wierd that some guys that work on cars or parts are often NOT car guys. Some are just dicks. Maybe the sandblaster guy was into building "ships in a bottle" or some other gay hobby.

I don't know about you but I don't choose to merge my hobbies and my work (paycheck), work always seems to take the fun out of everything.  :shruggy: So I guess it wouldn't surprise me that folks that work on cars are not car guys as well.  :Twocents:

Yup, what he said.  I asked the owner of the place where I got some upholstery work done about attending a local car show and he says, "I work on them all the time, the last thing I want to do is see them when I'm off work!"  So, I can understand that.  For me, I fly airplanes for a living.  The last freakin' thing I want to do is see, fly, be on, or talk about airplanes when I'm home and most of my friends are the same way.   :yesnod:  Can't fault him for that!  As far as the stalker thing goes..... :scratchchin:

I'm a construction estimator by day and when get home my spouse wants to know how much it would cost to put in a master bathroom....  I can never tell her a price.

grdprx: I would certainly leave a note with the guys fender or with the shop to give to the guy.  The worst he can do is not call you.  Big deal.  He probably lives down the block and you dont even know it...   :shruggy:

I agree!  I met a guy once that way.  Another time, I didn't have time to chase.. So I followed for a few min, took a pic, and went on my way.

Picked up my control arm today, and the fender was still there!  So, I left my card with a note on the back.  We'll see what happens!   :coolgleamA:

Doesn't matter what job it is, seems to have the same effect.  I unfortunately had to switch positions at work, and now work in an office most of the day working with computers.  Now when I get home, I don't even want to turn my computer on and check my e-mail.  I don't want to look at computers anymore at home (and I'm sort of a computer geek, like to play games and fligth simulator, but now I just leave mine off most nights).

That phenomenon isn't set in stone.
I am a house framer. If I see a construction site on my day off, I want to go look at it to see if their work is cleaner than mine.

Well, I didn't intend this thread to be about hobbies and work.. But I'll put my :Twocents: in, I really enjoy working on cars.  Learned quite a lot here and with experience on my DD's.  Thought of going to school and trying a new career.  But I hear all the horror stories about hating working on cars, once it's your job.  So I've been telling myself it's a bad idea.  I'm not in a position to need a job, but I was thinking along the lines of if I needed a new job/career.  So, for now, I keep it my hobbie.

I tried to convince my wife that I used to clean houses, do laundry & cook for my previous line of employment.  I just can't get her to believe me.   ;)

grdprx, I would have tried striking up a conversation with someone else that worked there.  That fender could lead to all kinds of possibilities.

While on vacation we'd have to drive from DFW to western Kansas to visit family.  If there was a crane with a lot of boom or jib close to the freeway I'd make a fuel stop so I could check it out.  A couple of times I passed out ball caps & stickers.  It used to rattle my wife every time.

I think the guy I was talking to was the shop owner.  He's a nice guy, just looked at me kinda funny when I started going into the details on Chargers..  Was more than willing to hand along my business card, and he gave me a great deal on sand blasting a control arm for me!  I'm happy all around.  Got the arm painted today, and bushings & ball joint installed.  Hope to put the car on her feet this weekend.  Might get lucky and receive a phone call too!  :Fingers crossed:
