73 Charger Gas Gauge Issue

Hello again everyone. I had an issue with my gas gauge where it did not raise too much above the E level. The gauge hand does move so I figured it was the float/sending unit that was the problem, so I installed a whole new fuel sending unit yesterday. When I turned the key the hand moved to the usual above the E level but that was it. I just came home from putting $20 in it just in case it actually was near empty but still nothing. Any idea on what the issue could be? As I said, the gauge hand does move so I don't know what it could be.  :shruggy:

Cheers

is there a grounding strap on the sending unit to the fuel line? have you tested the new float, right ride height?  :Twocents:

Cheers for the reply. I know for a fact there is a grounding strap on the sending unit to the fuel line. I stupidly didn't test the new float before putting it in. I might try and take out the new float tomorrow before work and check it out but to come and think of it, the original float that was in the tank didn't look too bad at all when I removed it so maybe there could be another issue? I'll post an update when I work on the sending unit again.

sometimes you do have to bend/tweet the float rod a bit for a better reading.

terrible one

Unplug the wire from the sending unit and ground it. If the gauge jumps to full, then you know your problem is with the sending unit. If it does not, then you've got a gauge problem. Do the other gauges work? Try that, it only takes a few minutes, and go from there.

Agreed. If your other guges read low as well you could have a bad voltage limiter.
