Idiot proof doors?

Ok I really need to ask because this is bugging me, did Dodge have idiot proof doors or are the door locks just broken on my car? On my Dart you cannot lock the door if the door is open. You either have to lock the door when it's closed (ie from inside) or using the key. As it stands it's almost impossible for me to lock my keys in the Dart as long as my ignition key and door key are on the same ring and I was wondering if this was a design or just faulty locks on both the doors.   :P

Mine is the same.. Almost annoying at times but a nice feature when you jump out and forget to grab the keys....

I actually like that feature.  You can't lock your keys in your car by mistake.  I had a Datsun 280ZX Turbo as my first car and you had to hold the handle up in order to lock the door. Now that feature sucked!

I can lock it with door opened. :shruggy:

( and have left the keys on ign switch AROUND 3 TIMES, ACCIDENTALLY pressed the lock and closed the door , once with engine running :brickwall: )

Guess Dodge figured that if you purchase a Charger you're not an idiot and won't lock the keys in the car whereas those that buy Darts....

Wait a minute....   :slap:

Well, I can only say it applies for my 69 model.   :nana:

bull

I remember Dodge making doors like that. I also remember God making better idiots.

My 73 Charger and 74 Valiant let you lock the door with it open. I locked the keys in the Charger once, I bent a coat hanger and within literally 30 seconds I was in the car.

I think that was a 70 and before feature. My 71 Challenger , just lock and close. All my 70's , I had to use the key.  :shruggy: You could always lock the door and crawl out the window.  :nana:

Nacho-RT74

in my defense I can say everytime I locked the doors, it was accidentally not intentionally. I'm able to heard the buzzer LOL.

My 68 does not lock with doors open. Neither did the Aussie Chrysler Valiants.....Must be a Chrysler thing
Make it idiot proof, and somebody will make a better idiot!

If you think Education is difficult, try being stupid!

I think it is a 70 and earlier feature, my 64, 67, 68 A108, and 69 MoPars wont lock without the key, however, i found out the hard way on my 71 Scamp.

A383Wing

all my cars I own 70 & earlier will not let you lock the door and close it....all my cars after 70 can be locked & closed

maybe it was just Mopar....because I do remember we had a 68 Firebird that you could lock the doors and then close them

doctor4766

Yep this is a feature that pi$$ed me off so I installed remote central locking on my Charger.
Sure beats having to lean all that way over and ulock the passenger side when you get into the car as well.
Gotta love a '69

A few years ago my wife got out of her mini van to get the mail.  When she shut the door the dog put his paw on the lock button.  What a pain that was...

My old Ford truck (1966) doesn't have a lock knob, you push the door opener lever (the one inside) forward to lock the doors. If you have the door open, push the lever forward to lock it, then shut the door, it will automatically unlock itself as the door shuts. You have to actually use the key to lock it from the outside.
It doesn't get much more idiot proof than that. :icon_smile_big:

The Aquamax...yes, this bike spent 2 nights underwater one weekend. (Not my doing), but it gained the name, and has since become pseudo-famous. :)

On my old tbird, you needed to hold in the push button for the door and they would stay locked when you closed em.

that was the same as our old 64 Nova...push button down, hold in push button, then close door

resq302

my 82 Datsun 280ZX Turbo was the same way.  When you closed the door, you had to hold the handle up for it to stay locked.
