I am putting me 68 charger back together. The car has a mostly stock 440 from a 1975 vehicle. It has a stock mechanical fuel pump, but also had an electric fuel pump mounted in the trunk. Im not sure if this is common, or why someone would need to run 2 fuel pumps on a mostly stock 440.

Not uncommon, usually to address vapor lock problems.

Maybe the electric one is a back up...Never seen two running at the same time...That idea, is nuts.

Some don't know that the fuel pump rod wears out . They have a fuel delivery problem and they fix it with a pusher pump.

Is that the rod that is part of the fuel pump or the rod that is inside the block and pushes the pump arm? If its the rod inside the block, how difficult is it to replace/repair?
(I woud rather make sure the mechanical fuel pump is 100% operational and not run the electric pump.)

Pretty simple to replace, pull the FP out and remove the plug under the fuel pump, rod should fall out possibly with some persuasion from your finger.

They wouldn't run together.  drop the mechanical and go wit he electric.

Take the hex key plug  out of the block below the pump and the push rod should come out. I am not near my Service manual ,but I think the rod should be 3.25" long. Maybe someone will chime in with the exact measurement.  They wear down until the pump has a fraction of its normal stroke and then the engine runs out of gas under acceleration. The mechanic pump with a good pushrod works fine for most cars.
