If that guy gets the $50k he's hoping to get off the sale of that model I hope he uses part of it to register for English and writing classes at his local community college.

chargerjy9

If that guy gets $50K for that model, then maybe I will put up for auction a styling model of a proposed 2011 AMC Marlin that a couple of friends and I created for an International AMC car meet last summer. It, too is rare. The model was designed by the original designer of the Marlin back in the 60's. It was engineered and the clay model was done by former AMC guys. It is feasible to be built for real.

I doubt if he gets that much .But its a piece of memorabilia from Designer Elwood P Engel legacy. The same guy who built the topless charger that became the supercharger :Twocents:

Is he perhaps less the guy who designed all of those things than he is the guy who was in charge of the department that did all of that?

Brock Samson

i always marveled about the C-IIIs' lineage to the original charger concepts done in '63. which looked to be mid engined...
and how well it eventually translated into a front engined double diamond design we know and love as the second Gen.
you could make your own out of wood in 1/16 scale. for maybe $200. all in.

In Elwood Engel's case, at that time he was in charge of the department, but those guys always take and are given credit for the designs that they were in charge of.

well.. you could, yes the materials are cheap, but the tools and skill to create that out of wood don't come cheap. far better to do out of clay, easier to change and manipulate surface development. than you cast it and make fiberglas model to preserve the design integrity.

When i was in college 3-d design class i made my own design out of four pieces of redwood stacked to a rectangle I planned the major angles of the four sides with rasps, drilled out the wheel-wells and light buckets.
Placed dark transparent plastic in slightly recessed window green house then covered the entire works in plaster which i sanded to the correct smooth contours.
I used wheels, tires and exhaust tips from a 1/16 scale Mantra Formula One kit. Spray painted the entire sculpture silver (minus the window tint), and striped it with two sizes black model tape for door openings and such... took most of the semester and came out really quite nice. Got an A+ and many kudos.  :icon_smile_wink:

Actually, The European car design departments used plaster in their full size mock ups in the past. I'm sure some still do. there were a lot of highly skilled artisans who probably didn't have much work doing plaster relief ceilings any more.

I wish I still had the toy version from the late 60's.

Also loved the real car.

Someone on Moparts once posted this set of pics. Supposedly an old fiberglass replica or something.   :shruggy:

I love the concept of not being able to see (or care) what is behind you.

I don't know any of the history of this car. Was the original destroyed like most of them?

Magnumcharger

The original was nothing more than a semblance of a car.
It was a fiberglas shell, on a wooden frame with a set of wheels mounted on plumbing piping!
No kidding!

some molds were made for drag cars, a couple of those remain... The Flying Dutchman was the most famous example. it was never a running car only a full sized detailed mock up..

I remember back when that car first came to light there was a lot of discussion on these very forums. Some claimed it was the actual original body then a bunch of started pointing out why it wasn't. Good times :D

I can't imagine a world with that kind of Charger! It would alter space and time! I think if it would have gone into production, the universe would have collapsed in on it's self!  :smilielol: Seriously though, I would like to know more about the story of the Charger III. Does any one know where I could find more info?

Brock Samson

did you do a search?.. :shruggy: there's several threads here..

DustinSimmonds

Ha, I really haven't thought about searching here!  :scratchchin: I was searching google. I'll have to do a search here!  :2thumbs:

this was the original double diamond design Dustin,.. the sketches and model date from 1963.
the Double Diamond and Coke Bottle design seem to have both been in play for the Corvette and the Charger.

i found a couple new pics... Attn: serious photo collectors (ie: Magnum) i will send you the huge ones that wouldn't fit here, just provide me your e-mail address..  :shruggy:
