Jake's 69 R/T Y4 Gold Poly progress update

Jake

Thought I would post an update to the old thread y4Gold or Orange. Finally got back on this project. Over the past week I have converted part the shop to the paint booth again, pulled the big poly curtain around which creates the booth. Covered up the other cars. Still no paint on outside of car, still doing the y4 Gold jamming. Spent yesterday sandblasting parts outside (underside of hood, valance etc) cause it was finally a nice day here in Minnesota. Pic inserted below is of my bud helping me with the  body work. He has painted a few cars for me in the past and is used to working in my shop.  Planning on doing one more coat of surfacer, then more sanding etc. Glad to be back at it (thank you uncle Sam for the tax refund), wow autobody supply prices have sure gone WAY up!

Once this thing is painted I have to drag out all the parts that have been in storage for a very long time, spread everything out and evaluate what I have. The assembly process will slowly begin. And the sticker shock of the cost of all the parts I need will hit. Onward!

Forgot to add, over the winter I did a disk brake conversion, front end bushing rebuild, got the motor fired up, tuned up. new gas tank installed and new shocks.

Jake

Hey, that's a Charger in there. Pic of makeshift booth

Wow. Looking forward to more pictures. Outside of the plastic curtain.
This car was sold many years ago to somebody in Wisconsin. I now am retired and living in Florida.

Looking good  Believe me I know...all that priming/blocking/priming/blocking sucks big time, but when you get that thing lazer straight, its all worth it.

Reminds me of mine a while back ago  :yesnod: ....

Looks like your doing a great job  :2thumbs:

Don't stop blocking because there's no such thing "as good enough" when it comes to this all important step. :yesnod:

Sprayed final coat of surfacer over the weekend. It is "cooking" this week. more sanding this weekend. Looking pretty good though. Priced a gallon of paint. $480.00 bucks for PPG. wow.

Jake

Just learned some interesting info on the y4 Gold Color. Was told the Dodge name for this color in '69 was Golden Fawn. Original part #AY2EY4. Anyone ever hear of that name? The Gold Poly was the PPG name for it. Thoughts?

thankfully the 5 previous chargers I have assembled are all coming back to me. But its been 3 e bodies and 1 A body since. Digging out bins of excess B body build parts is taking lots of time, sorting etc. Trying not to buy repop parts. Trying to clean and restore good used parts. This takes lots of time time time. well I have time, but would be nice ot drive it yet this year.

Wow, beautiful.     :2thumbs: I will definitely be going back to my original Y-4 color now on mine! Thanks for the pictures. Does this color change much in different light?

Jake

Thanks all for the compliments, grizzlygiff, yes this color changes dramatically in light. almost tan in bright sun etc.

Jake

Progress is slow going. Exhaust is on. Vinyl top is on and headliner is in. Finish the rest of the interior and chase issues. http://www.jakesgeneralstore.com/image/view/2106/_original

Finally got to drive the Charger to a car show last weekend. Will post some outdoor pics soon. Wiring issue was loose nut on amp meter gauge. Friday night at 10pm I was still putting seats in the car. Made it to the show Sat AM. First real road trip. What a blast to drive. The 440 is very stout and the car runs just perfect. Best reward for building this car for the past 2 years is finally getting to drive it. Some finishing left to do and a lot of cruising left to do before the snow flys.

If you want a longer drive to go on we are going to "Cars and Coffee" in Chanhassen on October 1st.

Hi Jake,

Must say that your ride looks fantastic.  I have a Y4 also and, while it is nowhere near as sharp as yours, I'm quite taken with as a colour.  Thing is though mine has had a respray at some point and the gold appears much darker.  How close to the original colour is your respray? (I prefer yours as it lifts the car and gives that litheness which is hard to get in a full body whereas mine seems heavy and rather drab).

Cheers Simon

Jake

Thanks for the kudos guys.

Simon- I sprayed a test panel using the same code from three different paint manufacturers. Each one was very different due to the metallic count and size. I took my test panel out in sun at different times of the day. I chose the one that looked true y4 to me. It is base clear, with plenty of clear. maybe that is why in comparing it to yours it may appear to have more of a shine?

figgy308

Hi Jake,

Thanks very much for your reply; sorry I've been tardy in replying except that it has been over 100 the past 3 days and I couldn't face sitting in front of a hot computer.  I would have enjoyed the a/c in my Charger except that it is still in the workshop.  Would you mind sharing the details of the paint manufacturer as mine will need a respray and I am so impressed with the way yours has turned out.  I really like the cars to look as they did in period, some people don't and that is cool, but if I could get mine to turn out half as nice as yours I'd be a happy man.

Cheers Simon

Jake

Hello Simon, Thanks again for the kind words.  The manufacturer was PPG. However if you are going for circa correct look the base clear extreme shine look may not be what the factory produced. I would think one would want a much more dull look. I suggest you start a new thread and ask folks how to get an original paint look. Maybe a single stage will get you what you are looking for. Thanks again for the KUDOS, be well.
Jake
