HEY... I had one of these cars once...

I had the Charger out the other day, running a few errands. I have just 20 miles on the motor since the install. I was just getting out of the car at the grocery store and a guy came up to me...." Hey.. nice car! I had one of these. " I'm sure that this happens to alot of people. It happens just as much now as it did when the car was still wearing a worn out F8 green and the original 318.
This guy was one of the few that knew what he was talking about. Most are enthusiastic and happy to see an old car on the road. Most say..."Hey, cool car. Is that a 440 SIX pack?" It seems most eveyone thinks that all 440 engines were six pack motors. THAT or a 440 hemi.  I dont mind though. I like seeing people light up when I roll in to a parking lot. Lucky for me that it wasn't leaking or smoking!

That happens to me a lot when i take my charger out....Ussually ends the story of how they tottalled the cars! Now when someone says they used to have one i ask how it got wrecked!

I always love talking to the guys that used to have a '68 Challenger with the 454 Hemi and the 5-spd stick.

Kern Dog

68 Challenger? Was that a Plymouth? Yeah... It had 4 wheel disc brakes and .......

Cooter

In "Christine"...."Hey, nice Cadillac".  "I had a 1956 Chevy just like it"..."Does that thing have the Hemi in it?"...

In the "General Lee".....Too many to list, but here's a few...
"Hey, where's Daisy?....."You don't climb out the windows??"....HEY! Those doors ain't supposed to OPEN????"......."Which one are you? Bo or Luke?"...

In the Dart......"Nice, I had a Chevy II when I was in HS..Wish I had that car back. Does this one have the 283?"

I will say the most craziest comment I've heard had to be the kid asking me seriously, if I "Had the Heavy Duty shocks for jumps and could he climb under and see cause he wanted to jump his Charger"...
" I have spent thousands of dollars and countless hours researching what works and what doesn't and I'm willing to share"

i had the charger out tuesday and this kid  about 27 comes out of buger king to look at mycar. he said he bought one brand new right off the show room floor. yeah right

I think some people may just be trying to start up a conversation & are not "car" guys,so it's no big deal if they got things wrong.

Things I don't like are people low balling me with offers when it isn't even for sale. Then getting ticked when I won't tell them how much it would take to get it.

My car hasn't been driven regularly since the 80's.  But "HEY... I had one of these cars once..." seemed to always end in; before Nam, when I got back from Nam, before I got married, or before the kids.  I rarely had a blowhard and the only aggravation was from those who pointed out that the emblems were incorrect with the stripe.

But there was one I will never forget.   I walk out of the gas station and see the "40 something guy" sitting behind the wheel.  I hung back because it was obvious from the stare he was on a ride down memory lane.  When he got out, he looked at me and said, (you guessed it)  "had one of these once..." and walked away.

I remember it like yesterday.  It was creepy and cool at the same time.

when i frist bought my 68 charger new and drove it home. i had to stop for gas .i put the gas in myself because i did not want it spilled all over the car.this kid comes out and said whats and old man like you driving a car like this. i was 37 at the time. i said hang on i will show you why and i left leaving tire marks for about 30 feet out of the place.

If I came back to my car to see some asshole sitting in it, I'd be pissed. I'd certainly wait for him to get out, then I'd tell him that sitting in someone elses car without permission is a good way to get your ass kicked.

I was twenty. I had no reason to suspect he was an asshole, still don't, and he wasn't hurting a thing - just some middle aged guy taking a ride in his mind.  I was happy I could help.

I can appreciate that you showed respect to the guy, but there are boundries. If the owner is not around, its simple:
Stand and look.
Bend down and look underneath if you want.
Never get in the car. Never open the hood. Dont touch the car. Dont lean on the car. If I am next to the car, ask me. I'm the type that is usually quite friendly and accomodating UNLESS you do something without asking, then I'm pissed.
I LOVE to talk with fellow enthusiasts. They just need to be respectful.

Yeah had to laugh yesterday.
We were leaving a Classic car show that was spread out over a huge area so not everyone had seen every car on the grounds.
As I was driving out I was behind a dude with a near new Mustang that he obviously thought was sex on wheels and there were plenty of onlookers taking pictures of cars.
So these two blokes on either side of the road jump up suddenly with their cameras and the Mustang guy pulls up for them to get some shots. Lol you guessed it. They motion for him to get his car outta the way so they can snap some pics pf the Charger behind him.
Don't think he was a happy traveller....
Gotta love a '69

Sure, I agree.  Technically the guy was out of line in any social context.  He saw an opportunity for needed  trip in the "way-back machine" and hopped in.

Times have changed, and I might react a little differrent today.  But, unless he was keying the car, or doing my wife in the back seat, I would hope to react the same today.  It's just a car and I'm not, and hope to never be, "angry-guy".

Question, if you came back from the store to see a hot chick with a thong sitting in the driver's seat looking stary eye, what would you do? :drool5:

Funny question, but it doesnt change the fact that I'd be pissed. I'm married to a great woman and I never cheat despite ample chances to do so. Sure, I wouldnt kick "Thong girls" ass. Good looking girls get used to being lusted after and guys doing things for them. Have you ever been rude to a real HOT woman? It throws them off and they get confused. SOME even hang around trying to convince you to be nice to them. Sometimes when I was single I ignored the pretty ones and talked to the plain girls. It was fun to piss off the hot girls.

I took the '71 Bee out this weekend for a ride. I found this great place to take a few photos. I was not out of the car for 2 minutes and this guy came up and said, "That's a disgrace to what you did to that car". I asked what are you talking about? He said "putting that wing on the back."

Again I said what? What are you talking about? This is the original Gull wing that came on the car. He then said, "No Chevy ever had a wing like that." I said you are correct, this is not a Chevy, it's a Dodge Charger Super Bee. He then said, "Oh is it a '67"?

I then said nothing, and just took my photos, gull wing and all.
