well...like others have said I think a rotted frame is one of the limits... but i think one of the biggest piece of the puzzle is the car's story...if your car has personal value your more likely to sacrifice to get it done...that being said, sometimes the facts are just the facts and as much as we want to spend the money we just plain cant...

anyways...mine looks pretty far gone...

http://www.dodgecharger.com/forum/index.php/topic,60532.0.html

but it has a lot of personal value...so when i get to a place in my life (im in college now with, count it: zero, dollars to spare on a resto) when i can focus a bit more on the car I'll invest the effort into it regardless of the condition its in.  Truth is, i could probably get another 72 in much better shape for 5k instead of sinking 5k into my car now...but that car has a ton of personal value so i see it as a worthwhile trade-off

...sometimes...  ::) to each his, or her, own  :2thumbs:  :Twocents:

:yesnod:  yep would not scrap that !! spend a weekend blasting , wire brushing  , cutting out  & cleaning up all the rust , ready for the new sheet metal   , won't look as bad then  , its the rust dirty brown/red color  make you think oh S****
now what have i gone & done buying this ,  if half the floor or trunk is all ready rotted away  ,  big hole  , its no different that you cutting the said floors out with a few small holes to fit new pans , just  looks worse  to a non body guy   :Twocents: i know what i'm trying to say but i'm  not explaining  it  to well  :slap:

Vickie, do a little comparison of the RT/SE to the 500. IE how much worse it is than the 500 was when you started? And don't you have other projects as well other than the RT/SE?

All these pics of rusty cars look pretty familiar to me. My problem is I see many of them as diamonds in the rough. But I am fully aware of the time and money required to bring these cars back. It's hard to tell if the RT/SE is as bad as the 500 was because it is a complete car at this point. it is just as it was 20 years ago when I stopped driving it. Once you take out the engine, interior, and cutting away the rusty parts, it starts to look a lot worse. Kind of like the pictures of the 70 on this thread.

The analogy of wanting a car from your younger days is correct. I love my 500 and from the standpoint of whether it was the right thing to invest in is not questionable, but I always wanted a nice standard 69 charger since they came out. My dream car was an F6 (Spring green) Black top and interior. The RT/SE is R6, black interior/white top/440/auto on the tree. MsMopar

It's too far when what you are really going to do is rebody the VIN and matching number stamped metal portions.

I thought we just proved that to not be true? If you set aside any personal preferences about "originality", then nothing is too far gone now.

Ghoste

We can do it again in this thread if you want but I think you already know where I stand.  You don't actually restore anything when you do it that way, you just clone it and add the original serial numbers.

I would have saved that 70 SE.  The success stories are the ones where you're in the garage 4 - 5 nights a week and weekends.

Kern Dog, you are very nostalgic aren't you?

Yes. Sometimes I feel like I am living in my own rearview mirror.

Speaking of too far gone.  I just went out and took a last look at mine.  Time to let her die.  What do you think?

Not a chance!!! Mine was worse than that and now I'm near having a rust free shell to start hanging new sheet metal on.

look at the door jambs on this 72 Challenger, to me this car may not be worth restoring.  :scratchchin: On the good side it's numbers matching driveline is untouched and the car is mostly complete and original with nice a color combo. Restoration cost will also be more then this car would be worth, but it's not all about the money.
