Some great choices here, 'n lots of obvious choices but I'll list some i love and I'd bet few folks here have heard..

Eddie Hazel - played with the early Funkadelic known for his maggot brain solo... http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pNuCnyjt_gg  I Want You/She's so Heavy, yep the Beatles tune...

Vernon Reid -  known for playing with Living Color but he can also play Jazz with his Ornett Colemanish band the Decoding Society,  http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tTjKWq9Gges The Cult of Personality.

Skip Macdonald - Little Axe is his band though he's well known in england playing with Tackhead the last 30 years...
Tackhead was a Chicago back up band band known for "The Messege"... http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tTjKWq9Gges n the late 1970s, Wimbish, Leblanc and McDonald were members of the house band for the Sugarhill Records record label and the trio of hip-hop artists known as Sugarhill Gang. They were also the musicians playing behind DJ Grandmaster Flash's 1982 hit "The Message" (the vocal was by Melle Mel) and another hit "White Lines".
Despite not recording any new material as Tackhead since (1990), group members continued to record as the backing band or along with various (30?-40?) Sherwood-led On-U Sound productions artists such as Gary Clail's solo efforts, African Head Charge, Dub Syndicate, New Age Steppers and others. Subsets of the group have also appeared in various guises such as the Strange Parcels, Barmy Army and the blues-oriented Little Axe.
In addition to continuing to collaborate with Sherwood and the On-U Sound record label, each of the other members continues to lead active solo careers. McDonald leads the Little Axe project, and Leblanc runs a record label and plays with two jazz outfits, Noah Ground and Nikki Yeoh's Infinitum. As well as remaining much in demand as a session bass player, Wimbish later became the bass player for Living Colour and has recorded solo material as well as forming the short-lived Jungle Funk (later Head>>Fake), a live drum and bass outfit also featuring Living Colour drummer Will Calhoun. I include so much history of them because they are virtually unknown here in the states but are such prolicic and respected artists overseas, Wimbish is a supremely accomplished Bassist who should be heard in my not so humble opinion... http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WW5TGZG4hUo  ADRIAN SHERWOOD- Paradise Of Nada Remix

of course Steve Morse - of the Dixie Dregs, I've been to see near to ten times...

Tommy Bolan - who's been dead from a heroin overdose since oh, i dunno,.. about thirty years ago, still his two solo albums are as strong now as they ever were..
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5DBzlLWGHtE Post Toastee,.. ironic isn't it?..  :'(

Phillip Catherine - who's well known in Europe and in his early days played electric which he rarely does today...
         ttp://www.youtube.com/watch?v=U2NBIA--GSI
                     homecommings

Ralph Towner the master of the solo 12 string who's stirring original compositions always inspire.
  http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=af1RD7Okbtk

Alan Holdsworth who I saw trade solos with eddie Van Halen at GIT in the '80s, a Titanic struggel in which, ultimatly Eddie lost..    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6zPZd_8JCFc
 http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dcAVpvQAwm4

lettuce not forget   Garu Moore who played with Thin Lizzy and did a host of his own solo albums the last twenty years... or Gary Schider also of Funkadelic's musical circus.. Robert Trower, Al Dimiola,.. David Sancious who's an amazing guitarist and pianist on a legion of albums of his own and others...  http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KMRooagrjAI

sorry, some of the links ain't viable...  :shruggy:

As the years have past I've found myself gravitating towards the original delta blues like RL burnside stuff done on the porch and in more primitive realistic conditions as opposed to the major remixes and "Tracked" productions.

RL Burnside is really good.

I know what you're saying Dave, that's one of the reasons I never really cared for Gary Moore's style of blues. Gary was great, but his blues sound had a "polished" or an over engineered sound that wasn't gritty.

This guy, Seasick Steve is not the world's greatest guitarist, but he sounds awesone.

He was even on Top Gear with a custom hubcap guitar.

 Yeah, "Grit"..
my Fav. Hendrix clip is the one where they just handed him a strange 12 string and asked him to play something,.. so after a false start he quickly revamps the entire arrangement and lays out this stirring and heart felt blues...

Yup - I liked Vernon Reid's playing.

Gary Moore is another who will be missed.

One rarely mentioned - Terry Kath of Chicago. Listen to Chicago's first 6 or 7 albums and see how musical and able to change styles the guy was. Jimi Hendrix saw him in his early days, copied a few things and commented "that dude plays better than I do".

BTW, he's in my list on page one (along with a few other great players that have yet to be acknowledged here).

I gave thought to putting Steve Howe on my list, but the thread was only for choosing your 10 favorites. I just saw him last year with Yes & he is still great. I've seen Pat Metheny several times, but haven't listened to him in a long time. Adrian Belew is good, saw him many times with King Crimson, & also saw BB King.

If you want to mention session guys, how about Larry Carlton? He was on some Steely Dan albums & I got to see him a few times solo with his own band, really good, too.

Always wanted to see Larry Coryell, but haven't yet. I did see his son, Murali Coryell who is good. The first time I ever heard Larry Coryell was an album with the Brubeck Brothers, probably in the mid 70's.

Another guy who shocked me was Mike Stern when I saw him with Miles Davis.

Also, I went to see a band I liked called "Treat Her Right" when they opened for Joe Ely back in the mid to late 80's. I had no idea who Joe Ely was, but his guitar player was incredible. I'm not 100% sure if I have the right name, but I think it's David Grissom.

I saw Mike Stern with Miles and With Sting. kinda' stiff not my Fav. It was just so amazing that A bonafide Jazz player like Miles would have a Stratocaster player on stage with him back in the '80s it simply wasn't done!!!  :eek2:

You know who's really damn good?.. Dave Crosby's son Raymond who preformed in the band CPR  with him... Nice guy too, met him at a resterant by chance a couple days after we saw them perform here...  :shruggy:
