i mentioned this thread to my 'ol lady,.. 'n she instantly voluntereed how she got her mom's impala up to 140 on the way home from high school one day...   :smilielol:
My cars heavily modified with well over 500 HP, basicly comletely rebuilt with HEMI suspension parts and I'm afraid she'll go air born over 115,.. but you guys bury the needle with lots more left...  :shruggy:

I've had mine up to 110.  It was still pulling good too.  I have no doubt it could probably hit 130-135 but I'm not sure if I want to take it up that fast since I really don't know what the redline of the engine is.  I'm assuming it's low since it came out of a 1974 motorhome.
I've had my 70 SS Chevelle up to I'm not really sure since the speedo stops at 120 and it was still pulling hard up to 6000 RPM  ;).

Had the Ralley up to 95 last summer 340/416 stroked, didnt want to go any faster for fear of hurting myself or the car!

The reason I don't do the "top speed" thing anymore is when I was about 16 Y/O, My brother bought an original '69 Charger R/T, B5 Blue with white tail stripe, Console Auto bucket seat B5 interior. Had a 383 in it when he got it, but he located a '69 440 for it and "Built" it..

Wasn't long after that that one of our HS buddies would "Talk sh*t" about a 2BBL 302 1968 Cougar he had doing "A buck 50" through the bottom here, well my brother wasn't one to take this as the typical BS it was, so here we go....

I'm in the back seat, "Goose" was in the pass. front seat, and my borther driving. We get that 'ol Charger up to around 110 on the 2 BBL, then he says to Goose: "you wanna see 150 MPH??" He floors it and we get to around 135 MPH, as that was all it would do with wind resistance and what not, and the next words I will never forget....

"Now, you WATCH this Goose"...He begins to turn the steering wheel about a 1/4 turn both ways and the car doesn't turn...I said "Set this thing back down on the road and lemme outta here!"...

That was the last time I ever rode with my brother in that car..

C5X DAYTONA

140 mph is shows on my GPS on the front strait at Willow Springs Raceway in my white 69 Charger Daytona.  I got a speeding ticket a few years back in an my original 69 Daytona that I put 2.76s in, that ticket said 140+.  Officer said his car only went 140 and I was gone..  Chased me for about 8 miles on the I-10 till I got a phone call that a CHP was chasing me.  I had no idea he was way back there.. I was just out for a little cruise.     Had the needle bouncing on the M on MPH with my old 69 Daytona clone with a 500CI wedge, 3.23s and a gear vendor overdrive..  I don't speed anymore.   Wait.  Got a speeding ticket last week in my 72 Rallye Challenger..    Yep,  I support our local Sheriff's.   I don't encourage anyone to speed.  But please stay out of the fast lane...Thank You..
Caution.... Low flying aircraft.

Getting a ticket is never good but when I do, I usually consider it the tax I pay for the privilege to speed.  Though once I felt the ticket was inordinately steep and actually got a speeding ticket on my way to court to contest it.    :slap:  At least I prevailed in getting the first reduced by 2/3.

In 2004 I was heading to Reno for the Hot August Nights shindig. At the time the 70 had a reringed 77 440 and 3.55 gears. I ran it up to 130 for a short time. I had already made upgrades to the suspension including a full rebuild with poly bushings, 1" T bars, 1.1/8 front sway bar, 7/8" rear bar and 18 inch rims and tires. The car felt totally stable and not much wind noise considering all 4 windows were down. The loud pedal was about an inch off of the floor.
I have since stepped up to a stroked 440 that is certainly capable of higher top speeds with the right gearing.
I have a 4.10 diff in it now. I could  probably wind it up to 150 if I wanted to fit my engine in a 5 gallon bucket later.

UH60L

Back when I first got my '69 home from buying it, I openned it up on a long straight road close to where I live, just to see what it would do.  I'ts a 318 car that was switched to a 440 about 20 years before I got it.  It has a 440, 727 auto, and 2.76 gears, so it's not as fast off the line as most of it's siblings......but the speedometer hit 142 before I said "screw it, fast enough!".  It too, had some peddle left when I backed off.

As others have said, my car was floating all over the place, and I was just trying to follow the yellow line blur down the middle of the road.

I had only had the car 3 days and really hadn't given it a proper going over before doing this.  When I got home I realised I was missing a stud on the right front tire, the four way drum brakes were all shot, there were 3 bolts missing that hold the engine and tranny togeather, the aft tranny mount bolts were broken out, the starter was hanging by the stud, and the u-joints were falling apart.  Did I mention the engine had a tick in it?   :icon_smile_big:

Lesson learned.

But.....boy was it fast!  I've never been that scared and that excited at the sime time before or since that day.  (and I work on, and sometimes crew, black hawk helicopters for a living!)

RECHRGD

Back in the day, I buried the 150 mph speedo on my new '68 R/T.  I don't know how accurate it was.  That was with a 323 rear, auto, and stock F70/14 tires.  I didn't notice any "floating" at all.

does that car still exist? 190-plus with original style steering and suspension sounds scary to me..

I used to drive all my cars as fast as they could go, back when I was 18 and immortal. now that I have two sons to support I wont do more than 90 on public road and thats with a new car with airbags and shit on an autobahn. with a 40 year old car I am more interested how fast it will go to 70-80 mph and thats it. Maybe ONCE test it on airfield race where local SAABs do 190mph.

Bob T

Did the Ton a few times to see how the old girl would go ( 318 ) but when the guy took it for a test drive I saw it above 110  and probably didnt have that much left either

I know we all as the older we get, the faster we were, but damn.....Some of the replies here seem a little "Stretched" for me..Like "No Floating" at ALL, above 150 MPH, with Bias tires....When every single vibration @80 MPH in O/D on the freeway has people posting like crazy trying to figure out why??? MY own brother's Charger was modified and couldn't do more than 135 MPH because of wind resistance...I see replies here that top 150 MPH in a stock Charger.. :scratchchin:

I dont give a hoot about top end,its boring.Ride around town and running Mustangs and Camaros red light to red light is alot funner but it seems over the last 10 years those cars are getting alot faster. The last time I had my car at the track about 5 years ago she ran a best @13.23 with 391 gears.I thought that was good back in the day but now it aint nothing especially when those newer cars start pulling on you toward the top end.Thats why Im putting some HP in my car and a new 5-speed.

my 73 with 400 4 bbl has never seen it's top end. I always figured that the 150MPH speedo is sorta pie-in-the-sky. just don't feel it's wise for me to take her there with a motor that has 38 year old parts. she'll cruise  all day long at 85-90 MPH, but even that to me is abuse. I just won't subject her, and it's probably not a good idea, safety wise, any ways. I have been acused of babying my car, heck, I only burned rubber once, and that was by accident. I want to keep her as whole as I can for as long as I can. She only has 17 K miles on the odo.

Back in 1985 when I had my '69 Dodge Charger, I got it up to 114 mph on the highway. It had the 318/automatic combo in it. I'm not sure of the rearend gears but I would imagine that they were stock.

I'm with you. Back in the day, my stock 383 charger would go 120.  Might have gone 125 with another 5 miles of straight away.

I agree too. This thread inspired me to play around with my top speed and once I was at 100 I definitely got the floaty feeling, and this is with everything new up front. I don't think I would have felt good going much faster, maybe 110, with the 3.55s and 27" tires. The 383 was wound up!
