i got a 1965 chrysler new yorker motor i wanna build for a demo derby motor..... r these RB ENGINES OR B ENGINES IDK WHATS THE DIFFRENCE... ITS A 2BBL 383... WHATS THE HP AND TORQUE ON THEM AND CAN 440 HEADS FIT ON THEM OH AND ANY SUGESTIONS ON WHAT TYPE OF CAM AND INTAKE AND CARB TO RUN.... ITS GONNA DO ALOT OF HIGH RPM...

Cooter

"B" engine..Why can't you guys get Chevy's and Ford's to that with? Why must it be all the Imperials and big Chrysler's you can find to destroy?

High Rpm's and a stock bottom end don't mix. you need to spend some money or you'll be sitting on one blown up 383...Yes, "440" heads will fit, but are actually hurting you on HP and Torque as I assume they are "906" heads and are open chamber. Those 1965 heads are Closed chamber if stock...

Stock '65 383 should be in the 275-300 HP range, and around 370 Ft. Lbs. of torque.

MY FRIEND LOL.... iam not running a mopar on a derby man iam moper threw and threw.... iam running a 1960 oldsmobile dynamic 88 wagon.... BUT I HAVE to run a mopar engine man i love the sound... so just keep stock heads then.... what would u pick for a cam or intake? or should i just take a 318? its a big wagon so yea

Cooter

I can't emagine you want to sound like Don Gartlit's rail when trying to back that beast into someone else, so i'd stick with a conservative approach on the cam. Remember, you will need new Valve springs and a good valve job while your at it. You could theretically spend some bucks in this thing before it's all said and done...I'd run a Vac. sec. 650 Holley on that 383 and a dual plane intake like a Performer RPM..

hmmm.... any cam in specific u can throw to me? iam not looking for hp here just wanna make it perform better here....what would u prefer me to do to the heads? new valves and springs thats it? maybe a gasket match port job? i want everything to work nice here.... alot of ppl here in northen california run 318s and 360 due to that they like to run hott.. sum run the big block mopars and man they just sound wicked man.... i was thinking of a perorfmer cam and peformer intake with a 750 steet demon carb.. but iam open to sugestions

Cooter

I think I'd stay away from any sort of Demon Carb as Barry Grant is out of business...Sucks for any kinda warranty..
Sounds like you are on the right track with the cam set up for what your doing, but it WON'T be a "high RPM" motor until your lift is like .650 and duration is in the neigborhood of like 280 @ .050..Now, your into high RPM power. Sounds more like you are into low RPM grunt, or are just winding the damn thing unmercifully to hear it scream..Remember, those people in the stands cheering when you pop your engine, don't have anything to lose but their ticket money...

i think i over did it with high rpm lol.... i just want the thing to perform good.... what about a eddy rpm cam eddy rpm intake a 650 eddy carb vacum sec and a gasket match port job on stock heads? its  been rebuilt sumtime in its life it has a 030stapmed on the pistons....

92454ss

by the way i got a 73 dodge charger se with a mild built 318 so just to let u know i own a charger lol..... mom bought it for me back in 03 for my highschool gift... i was the only guy in my town with a old dodge charger man did i look cool cops would stop me just to check it out and funny part was i didnt have a licenses lol....

I thought 65 New Yorkers came with 413 4bbl RBs
That may have been a transplanted Newport engine, 2bbl Bs.

Pardon me but my karma just ran over your dogma.

I have to agree with Cooter here. You're doing it wrong. Put a Chevy 350 in the New Yorker or the olds and run that; leave the 383 alone. You can get a Chevy 350 at any 7-11 for the price of a Mopar cam and heads. Seems like a lot of work and money to be spent on a rare engine that's probably going to get windowed or at minimum, overheated.

i do want to drop this big block in my 73 charger.... what would i have to modify? i got the tranny to go with it i belive its a 727.... would the stock 8 1-4 rear end hold up to this big block? i heard i would have to change the k member?

92454ss

so your telling me this is not the org motor to come in the new yorker? it came off of a new port then?

92454ss

the motor reads by the dist B 383... AND ON THE LEFT SIDE OF THE BLOCK...2468130-3

and i think it says right before the b 383 on the flat pad by dist  11    11

It's pretty likely you'll "modify" the 383 beyond repair if you use it in a derby car.

Either a newport or another 383 2bbl Mopar

heyoldguy

Just so you have another opinion, run that 383 in the Olds. It will be the only thing out there that sounds like a real engine.

We've used a 383 for a derby engine. Ported the heads ran an old 300 degree advertised duration hydraulic cam with solid lifters set at .006 lash with adjustable rockers. Used an old DP4B dual plane and a 750 carb. The crowd loved the way it sounded. Used that engine for two derbies, put it into a '67 b-body wagon with a 4-speed and went to Mopars At The Strip, where it made 300hp and 330 torque on the chassis dyno. Put it back into another derby car and went to two more derbies. Its now slated for a rebuild and to go into the granddaughters '73 Charger for her first car.

You will love the way it moves that Olds around the arena!
