Leaving your Charger alone

How paranoid are you?

Never leave it alone, always in your sight or in the garage
Leave it alone at car shows and other events or in the parking lot for a quick trip into the store
Will park and leave it for a few hours
Have no problem parking and leaving it for a day or overnight
It stays parked outside all the time

terrible one

So, how do you guys feel about leaving your Charger? Right now I don't have a hood on mine and it still in project mode so I am hard pressed to even park it at the school for a day of class. Once I've got the hood on I think the farthest I would go would be to leave it parked somewhere in public for a short time while I went to run an errand or whatever. Still, I feel silly when I see this local '68 parked in an alleyway most of the time and it hasn't been kidnapped  :P Thoughts?

Topher

More #2 than #1, but I will not leave it alone or out of sight if we're out of town in it.

Ditto. I was told "If your car gets hit in a public parking lot that IS NOT a car show, we will not cover damages".

Comforting, but it got the point across loud and clear.

I have to say #2 because I enjoy taking it to shows, running errands, cruising around, and even taking it to work on nice days.  Although I really don't like leaving it alone for extended periods, and I would like to keep it in sight all the time.  But unfortunately that's just not practical.

When I was 23. I was in an AA meeting, it was night time. I was living in Vegas at the time. I had owned my 2nd Charger then. Sunfire Yellow, auto, slapstick, air, Yellow on black. Anyways the doors of the building were open. I hear this scrapping sound. some asshole in a Winnabeggo catches my right front and scrapes his whole side, and pushes my car a whole car lenth back. This guy just keeps on driving out of the parking lot. I run out jump in and start chasing this guy down. I had even forgot to turn on my lights, im on this guys ass honking. We get to Vegas BLVD (this is north of downtown). I caught him at a light in front of city hall, which is also Metros HQ. I always had a bat in my car. Now its bat, switchblade, and Beretta (on me). Anyways I run up and Im freakin boiling, I run up and Im yelloing at this guy, you hit my car. Thats when I knew the guy was wasted. All he said was "sorry man", he had his window open, and for a split second I almost swong on this guy, I mean, Ive been beat up with bats, been jumped, all that. Anyways, I could taste his blood on my bat, at that second....... next thing I know this cop, had already drawn down on me, and I heard him yelling at me. So I get put down, spread out in front of this dude bego. The cop cuffs me, Im yelling at the cop that this guy just hit my car. He pulls me up, puts me in front of his car, tells the bego driver to roll over, as the light had turned green. Bego driver just goes strait. My car is sitting at the light Idling. Cop puts me in his car, he jumps in, we he calls in for back up, and we start trailing him. We get on 15 heading west for like 5 miles. Theres no way this guy was getting away. He finally hits an offramp, and there cops, waiting. He stops, cop just out gun drawn. Passenger opens up starts walking away. Im a mad dog behind a fence seeing the passenger get out. But he gets taken down too. Long stoy short, it was his 3rd DWI, in Nevada, thats a year in jail. lawyers arrainged that if he paid for the damages, he would get out early...I had a dent on the passenger fender, that wasnt part of this, but I wanted it out. All the driver really did was push in my bumper, and the grill rim on the fender which is a bitch to fix. But I find the most expensive estimate, for his deal. He stayed a year. whole side of his bego was pretty much screwed, that with the door on that side.

It was my 2nd Charger it was a 68. What was messed up, was when we get back to the intersection, my car was gone. Theres that sinking feeling, and my face is flush. We drive around, and the cop puts out, looking for a yellow Charger. Come to find out, my friends at the AA meeting found my car, and drove it back. Man, I was so glad to see my car....

MAN I HATE THAT.  What is up with some people?  I drove it to the gym one day, the whole back row of spaces was empty so i parked next to the curb, come out and the whole back row was still empty along with half the parking lot, and there is a Honda parked right next to it.  He also backed in, so the passenger door was next to my drivers door, so i had a 50/50 chance of nobody in the passenger seat.   But i dont get it either.

I chose option 2 as i used to drive it daily, and it would sit in the parking garage at work, i parked way in the back so it was safe from parking lot dorks.  But i am also the same way, if i see you hit my car with your door, your car is in serious trouble.   Just ask the Mercedes driver who opened his door into my black Explorer.

I saw him do it, look at it, get in and leave, i got his license and called in a hit and run, followed him and the cop found us and filed a accident report,  i would go ballistic if someone did that to the Coronet.

I park next to classics all the time but only because I would hate for someone else (who doesn't appreciate classics like I do) to just throw their door into it.

Mine's a rat so I don't worry too much about it.  I don't leave it out on the street but I have left it in my driveway overnight.  Most of the time it stays in the garage.  Shows I don't worry about.

I've noticed this all the time as well, and it really can be aggravating. My theory is they want to get a good look at your car and instead of parking and walking all the way over there and back their lazy ass just parks right next to you.  :P

If it was an overnight stay some where I would be lucky to get a couple hours sleep at the most with every little sound waking me up.  Not anymore, that's why I pay $550 for insurance once a year.

Parking in handicap I don't usually have to worry about some joe parking next to me as well.  With the MSD 6al I hid a kill switch.  Thieves don't like any kind of hassles, so I have that and a few other visible deterrents that hopefully are enough.

There's a spy accessory outfit that sells little Hot Wheels size boxes that are GPS tracking units.  You can mount them any where you want or move them around.  They're reasonably cheap except the service was like $35 or more a month.  One advantage is you can pick & choose the months you want it activated.  If it was around $20 or less I might do it, but again, that's why insurance is for.

Combination of #2 & 3.

So for the asking, how many times do you suppose that you could have parked in a spot that someone parked next to you and dinged your car, classic or otherwise, that just left then another guy comes in before you come out and gets blamed and your gonna key his car up? Maybe not even his car but borrowed. Whats with the 3" front or rear limit if there is no contact? Sometimes just unexpected stuff like a sudden gust of wind or some other unintentional thing happens and someone would be more than willing to cover the fix. Don't get me wrong as I hate when people park up close especially when there are 40 spaces closer to where they are going and no excuse for hit and runs or shear negligence.  I saw a lady in a parking retaliate on the next car like that and she was the one who went to jail for vandalism.  I take a lot of care in opening my doors. Maybe because I'm 51 and not 16 yrs old but I think if it happened to me I'd call the cops and hit em in their pocket book for a new paint job cause if their car is a pos then a scratched up paint won't really matter. I'd be wanting to retaliate but that would make me no better than them.  If I was that freaked out about taking the car out I'd be better off leaving it home.  I've parked and left in public parking lots for 10 yrs in my R/T and yet to get it messed with or dinged.  Plenty late model Honda's etc get gone but then again the parts demand for them makes it easy to  sell off. If I leave the windows down I just pull the 8track out or move whatever under the seat.

Never had a charger, but I have had several mustangs with alot of money in them. Just seems like it would ruin the fun of owning the car if you were afraid to drive it anywhere. If I couldn't drive it to work or the store and enjoy it what would be the poing of owning it?

my charger never leaves my site. i went in a store once and parked in the spot with at least 50 stalls around me. came out and some asshole parked right next to me. i walked up looked at him smile at me and i lost it. started bitching him out. said 50 fing stalls and you park here.  he said its a free country and i can park where he wants. after that not worth the hassle. to many assholes out there. i am a prick about my car and dont care. its the one thing in life thats mine. so NO I NEVER LEAVE IT ALONE. it sits in my hanger or i am in it driving. 10 years i have had it my wife has only rode in it 3 times. my kids have been in it a couple of times and only two other friends have drivin it.  and at car shows i sit with it and spend all day telling people please dont touch the car.

Not many park beside me. I do remember one though. I came out of the grocery store and in a distance I could see a line of cars where my car was parked. They were moving real slow. I was used to that, but that was alot of cars! Got up there and parked right next to me was a 1968 Mustang GT500. Looked alot like Elenor with the silver and black.  :2thumbs:

Overhere I would say that being afraid of that they would take your car if you parked it on the street
for a couple of hours or even a night isn't a real problem, they are so unusal so unless it's a ordered

I drive my car a lot.  Over 36K miles in 11 years.  It's spent time in plenty of restaurant and shopping center parking lots over the years.  It even has spent a few nights in hotel parking lots when traveling to out of town shows.  Yea, there are always the jerks that will intentionally park next to you, but that's mostly done out of jealously and they just what to jerk your chain.  The only time the car has been damaged to date was at a car show (believe it or not) when a little old lady nosed her '56 Ford into my 1/4 panel.  She was 87 years old so I didn't hit her that hard, but she went down in a heap anyway.  Bob

Well, prior to putting mine in the body shop, I used it as a daily driver as much as I could (weather permitting).  I had no problems leaving it in a parking lot or at a car show.  My firend installed an alarm with keyless entry, and I would just lock it and go.

In three years, I never got door dinged.  I had a guy back into me in the Winco Foods parking lot, but he saw me and stopped quick enough that it just put a teeny tiny little scuff on the front bumper, and I just said  "hey man, don't worry about it".  (because I already had the new bumpers in my garage, and it was no big deal)

I did have some idiot park a 2006 sedan next to my car at the movie theater one night.  He thought he would be cool and park his white 2006 next my white '69.  Funny, he hadthe word "UGLY!" written on his windshield when he came out later.  Somone tried to park one of thsoe next to me at a car show, and I gave back the goody bag and left.

Now my car is garaged, because it isn't driveable, and at my current ratio of bills to income, it won't be for a while.  I do move it out into the driveway a couple times a year to gain access to the attic, but that's it for now.

Who are you to talk about "backing up your words and not running away."? You're a common low life criminal and a cowardly vandal with a warped and hypocritical sense of justice scratching people cars and then scampering away.

Go puff out your chest and unload your juvenile thoughts somewhere else. We aint buying your f'd up crap here!

I guess you are one of those smart ass guys who would ding someone elses car, and say its a free country. If you did that to my car, you would see how juvenile thoughts become manifest.

We are saying that nobody should ding anybody else's car, period.  You're saying that if someone parks too close, you key them.

You're an asshole.  Plain and simple.

Yea Im an asshole, plain and simple, ooooo that so hurts..here is my original post:

No matter how far off I park some goofball NEEDS to park right next to it.   My general rule is if they ding the side I key the whole side of their car, as long as its not a classic. If they park with in 3 inches of the front or back, they get keyed on thier hood or trunk.

If someone parked too close to the front or back, theres a pretty good chance they bumped my car. Distance I am forgiving of, but I do not like it, any dings or scuffs on the bumper....yea Ill key their car. I dont puff my chest, I beet it and make the Tarzan howl. HEHE....Im an asshole.  :icon_smile_big:

So I guess you've backed off the 3" rule unless you see a scuff on your bumper?  Then your OK with keying the s--t out of the possibly offending car?  Makes sense I guess, if you don't mind paying for hundreds or thousands of dollars to have their car repainted when yours is just a buff out deal.  Then if your really lucky, you can beat the s--t out of them and get thrown in jail and sued big time for assault.  Sounds like a plan to me... :shruggy: :shruggy:

To me its a matter of judgement. If I am parked way they hell out there, and theres only 1 other car next to mine.....hmmmm. Hey if they respond with a smart ass remark "its a free country", yea shits gonna happen. Been in fights before, been to jail before......

I wanted a driver when I bought my Charger so I was determined not to be too uptight about the occasional chip or minor scratch.  I may repaint it down the road anyway.  However, the alarming regularity of which that happens has been pushing my resolve.  I always park with plenty of space and the auto-lock engaged.  Still, it picked up 5 mystery scratches in the last 18 months with minimal mileage.  (Keyed once.)  By comparison, my un-garaged regular driver has had only 1 mystery scratch in 11 years!  It's inexplicable and thoroughly upsetting.

Related: One time I caught a woman keying a late 50's T-bird.  She was totally crazy and I kept her there until the cops showed up.

There are people out there that see someone owning something nice and they will try and ruin it. People will loath other peoples success. I just have a more aggressive stance at defending what is mine. Not saying Im right, just saying what would happen. Some one piles into your Charger while texting....I wouldn't be thinking "hey its a free country" Im thinking of, where the hell is that bat....But I have no doubt everybody here who owns a Charger does NOT want it touched by a stranger in any way shape or form.

http://www.theonion.com/articles/openminded-man-grimly-realizes-how-much-life-hes-w,19273/

"CLEVELAND—During an unexpected moment of clarity Tuesday, open-minded man Blake Richman was suddenly struck by the grim realization that he's squandered a significant portion of his life listening to everyone's bullshit, the 38-year-old told reporters.

A visibly stunned and solemn Richman, who until this point regarded his willingness to hear out the opinions of others as a worthwhile quality, estimated that he's wasted nearly three and a half years of his existence being open to people's half-formed thoughts, asinine suggestions, and pointless, dumbfuck stories.

"Jesus Christ," said Richman, taking in the overwhelming volume of useless crap he's actively listened to over the years. "My whole life I've made a concerted effort to give people a fair shake and understand different points of view because I felt that everyone had something valuable to offer, but it turns out most of what they had to offer was complete bullshit."

"Seriously," Richman added, "what have I gained from treating everyone's opinion with respect? Nothing. Absolutely nothing."

According to Richman, it was just now hitting him how many hours of his life he's pissed away listening intently to nonsense about celebrity couples, how good or bad certain pens are, and why a particular sports team might have a chance this year. The husband and father of two said that every time he's felt at all put out or bored by a bullshit conversation—especially a speculative one about how bad allergy season was going to be—he should have just turned around, walked away, and gone rafting or repelling or done any of the millions of other things he's always wanted to do but never thought he had time for.

At various points throughout the day, Richman could be heard muttering to himself that he couldn't believe he was almost 40 years old.

"Twenty minutes here, 10 minutes there. It all starts to add up," said Richman, who sat down and figured out that between stupid discussions about favorite baby names and reviews of restaurants in cities he'll never visit, he'd wasted 390 hours of his life. "And you know what the worst part is? It's my fault. Here I thought being considerate to others by always listening patiently to what they had to say was the right thing to do. Well, fuck me, right?"

According to Richman, he started thinking about how much time he's flushed down the toilet being an approachable person after a work meeting in which he let a coworker, David Martin, ramble on and on with an idea everyone knew was "total shit" the moment the man opened his mouth. Richman said that a single glance at the clock made him realize he had just spent 14 minutes of his finite time on earth not playing with his kids or being with his wife, but listening to garbage.

"It was like I stepped out of my body and saw myself actually listening to this man's worthless drivel—but it wasn't him who looked like a moron, it was me," Richman said. "I was nodding my head like an asshole and saying ridiculous things like, 'Right,' and, 'I see your point, Dave,' when I should have just said, 'Dave, your idea isn't good and you are wasting our time and you need to shut up right now.'"

By his estimates, Richman's receptiveness has resulted in 160 irreplaceable hours of listening to grossly uninformed political opinions, 300 hours of carefully hearing out both sides of pointless arguments, and at least a month of listening to his parents' bullshit about how important it is to be open-minded.

Eighty days have been wasted on the inane blather of his college friend Brian alone.

"All those hours I could have been relaxing, or reading all these great books, or getting into shape, or working on side projects that I'm really excited about," Richman said. "But instead I've been listening to overrated albums recommended to me by my asshole friends."

"Did you know that in my life I've listened to five days' worth of people talking about their furniture?" he added. "It's true. That's a trip to Europe right there."

While Richman has vowed to cease being open-minded to absolute horseshit, acquaintances reflected on his approachability.

"I love Blake," coworker David Martin said. "He's such a good listener. A lot of people are closed-minded and self-absorbed, but Blake always makes an effort to hear where I'm coming from. The world could use more people like him."

terrible one

Wow, that definitely will remove some confidence! Even with my daily drive I am totally OCD about parking, but that still doesn't help. Most of the offending marks are on the door handle and rear view mirror. I see people swing their door open all time with a kick or a shove, sometimes just smacking the car beside them and not even noticing. Must be an everyday thing for some people  :slap: Me, I'm ALWAYS super careful when opening my door not to hit anyone parked beside me . . . not only out of respect but also for the sake of my own paint!

Lets get back on track here.
I leave mine alone while running in a store. Already have some dings so I don't fret about another one.
Stuff happens and you gotta accept it unless you keep your car in the garage all the time.
I had to leave mine overnight in a parking lot once when I couldn't get it started. I must say that I didn't sleep good at all that night.

I have to weigh the possibilities of what may happen in order to decide if I am willing to leave my car somewhere. If I were to go to a local cruise, I'd leave it for a couple of hours & not really worry. If I were going to a store, I wouldn't bring it, but if I did I'd park far away. Too many "non-car people" at stores who let their door hit your car or use your car to keep their shopping cart from rolling away while they unload it. I don't think I'd be comfortable leaving it somewhere overnight, like at a hotel because they're too easy to steal. You don't even need a key to start it & drive off. Everything is insured though, so if I did have something happen, at least I'd be able to recover on it.

As for getting your panties all bunched up the crack of your ass because someone parked near you, that's just effin' retarded. Same goes for picking fights or keying a car over minor crap, it's retarded. The only time I felt justified messing with someone's car was when some drunken, toothless, dumbass in a beat to hell pick up purposely cut me off & flipped me the bird. He almost hit me head on pulling into the liquor store parking lot & forced me to lock up the brakes on a busy road. I turned around, went into the store to find him, but changed my mind when I saw the he-man hunting knife on his belt. I left, but drop kicked the mirror off the side of his POS on the way to my car.  :flame:

I wasn't living or driving in NY when that happened. Even if I were in NY, the relevance of what had happened, what I got, or the gun laws, makes absolutely no sense to anyone but yourself. The person who cut me off was simply an asshole, & assholes are assholes no matter where they are.

Not everyone is an asshole, they must first prove themselves worthy of that label. It only takes about 15 seconds in a conversation to determine that, less if you witness something they do, but a bit longer if you have to read through their posts on a forum.

Well, the mods are too busy moving topics to the right forum so someone has to do it. My job is very easy because assholes are easy to spot. Kind of like when there are only two people are on the elevator & one of them farts. Everyone knows who did it.
