Shifter selector shaft seal

I replaced the selector seal on my 727 a couple of years ago, but I could never get the new seal seated all the way down, it was not enough room for my tool.

It's still leaking 

That time I had manifolds, and now I've got tranny-hugging headers, there is absolutely no access to the selector shaft. So my question is, can you install the seal with just dropping the oil pan and valve body?

Drop the VB and knock the old seal out with a screwdriver/hammer. Use large washers and a bolt/nut to pull the new one in.
