If you could have the job you wanted, what would it be and why?

I guess this thread could go one of two ways. Everyone could list their dream job (which may be completely unrealistic) or everyone could list a job they feel they are somewhat or almost qualiified for (which would be more realistic). I'm just curious what jobs people think are the better ones out there, why you would like that job...maybe even what you think you'd make $$$ wise doing that job.

• My DREAM job would be designing and/or building cars...probably make around $100K or more a year.

• Since I have a degree in Corporate Management and 3 units away from Business Admin degree and 20 years of design and marketing experience my ultimate REALITY job would be Creative Director for a large well known design/advertising firm...probably make around $150K to $200K or more.

I would like to be a production manager in a guitar factory. A company like Fender would be cool. These days they build Guild and Charvel/Jackson under the same roof. Lots of interesting guitars being made there everyday. No idea on pay, but I would take it no matter what it paid so long as I could pay my bills it would work for me.

Chryco Psycho

I would build a few engines & spend the rest of my days testing differnt can intake combos & publish the results , probably end up designing cams , heads & EFI systems & using the dyno to make it work

you tell me WHY???

I'm 18 months away from sailing large ships across the oceans for a living.  There is nothing like being 3,000 miles from anything, and being in control of millions of dollars of machinery and cargo.  My best friend just got his lisence, and he is making 9K a month.  I will get 6 months of vacation a year too.  I couldn't imagine doing anything different.

Corporate airline pilot. Started off in school heading for commercial pilot with a two year degree in Aeronautical Engineering and pilot license, but the outlook for jobs was very poor for pilots in the mid 80's so I switched to Civil Engineering. Buddy of mine who stuck with it is Captain in United and making $ 125,000. But he did starve the first 12 years of his carreer and now with the cut backs, he's a bit worried.

Believe me when I say being a full time dad is not all its cracked up to be.   I have been a stay at home dad for two years and I think I am going out of my mind.  Don't get me wrong, I love my kids but by the time the weekend comes I find any reason to get away from my family.

It seems do-able to me, yet it might turn out to be unrealistic, I would have to work hard though.

As most likely I am going to the International Business School next year, going for the International Business and Management Studies. Which will make me a Bachelor in Business Administration, maybe after that my Masters. Anyway my dream job would be being an manager for either a US based International Company or a Dutch based company that ex-imports from the US. And climb my way up and maybe when I am in my 50's, it might even be possible (if I am still as flexible as today) to become a CEO of a larger company. Money would depend on how good I would be at what I do, you have managers that make around 80-150k a year. On the otherhand you have CEO's that make over 3,5 million a year.

I remember when you were just a goofy, dorky 17-year-old kid who's greatest aspiration in life was to be a mechanic.   Good job!

By the way, I'm not saying there's anything wrong with being a mechanic...its just that, at the time, Art wanted to be a mechanic...he just wasn't doing anything to achieve his goal...all he did was mope around and talk about how much his life sucked.

Great!

Most people don't learn that lesson until afer they've been working 10 years or so.

I had a fraternity brother in college who was 25 when he was a freshman.  I asked him why he finally went to college at 25 and his response was classic.

"I was on my sixth year of doing HVAC work (installing air conditioning systems) and as I was laying on the ground waiting for the ambulance after falling off the extension ladder, the thought entered my mind that, if I went to college, I'd probably never have to climb a ladder again."

On that note...

Sometimes the pressures of society make us forget that we already have exactly what we want!
An American businessman was at the pier of a small coastal Mexican village when a small boat with just one fisherman docked. Inside the small boat were several large yellow fin tuna. The American complimented the Mexican on the quality of his fish and asked how long it took to catch them.
The Mexican replied only a little while.
The American then asked why didn't he stay out longer and catch more fish?
The Mexican said he had enough to support his family's immediate needs.
The American then asked, but what do you do with the rest of your time?
The Mexican fisherman said, "I sleep late, fish a little, play with my children, take siesta with my wife, Maria, stroll into the village each evening where I sip wine and play guitar with my amigos, I have a full and busy life, senor."
The American scoffed, "I am a Harvard MBA and could help you. You should spend more time fishing and with the proceeds buy a bigger boat with the proceeds from the bigger boat you could buy several boats, eventually you would have a fleet of fishing boats. Instead of selling your catch to a middleman you would sell directly to the processor, eventually opening your own cannery. You would control the product, processing and distribution.
You would need to leave this small coastal fishing village and move to Mexico City, then LA and eventually New York City where you will run your expanding enterprise."
The Mexican fisherman asked, "But senor, how long will this all take?"
To which the American replied, "15-20 years."
"But what then, senor?"
The American laughed and said that's the best part. When the time is right you would announce an IPO and sell your company stock to the public and become very rich, you would make millions.
"Millions, senor? Then what?"
The American said, "Then you would retire. Move to a small coastal fishing village where you would sleep late, fish a little, play with your kids, take siesta with your wife, stroll to the village in the evenings where you could sip wine and play your guitar with your amigos."

My dream job has been the same since I got out of college. Two years ago they opened up a new Polaris Research and Development center in my hometown of Wyoming, MN. In college I wanted to design cars. That was my goal. I have since decided that this town is where I belong, so designing cars is out of the question. Well I took a job designing electrical substations in Minneapolis. I commute an hour a day and I hate the city. I love Polaris snowmobiles, so I am currently going to night school to try and obtain a job at the wyoming plant. They use different software than I use at work so I am taking classes to become proficient with their software. Then I am going to apply. I WILL get a job there and I will have a nice 4 mile commute! :icon_smile_big: and have a job that I love, and be able to snowmobile to work in the winter! :icon_smile_big:

I really enjoyed what I was doing before I became a para.
Crane operator, on call 24/7 due to the crane I was on.   My crane was brand new at a little over 2 million and was a blast to work, made life so much easier versus some of the junk I used to be on.   Going downtown with it was always a kick in the pants.   There's landmarks all over the city that I've been a part of.   I miss the comradarie of my co-workers.   Good money too, potential for over 100k but I liked my weekends when I could get them off, so 80k was enuf.   Anything over 50 hours you're giving to the government anyways.

Retired life being a house dad was OK for the first few months.   I enjoy the heck out of my daughter but I look forward to the weekends now.

What city is that? I have my NYC and NY State crane operator's license. I have operated Link Belts, Manitowoc's, American's, P&H's, Mantis and Terex. I don't do that as my primary job, but since I'm involved in construction and had some experience, I took both tests and passed both. Just have them in case I'm laid off and project engineering is slow at the time. The Operating Engineers union here need licensed operators pretty bad, but I'm staying were I'm at for now. I like my weekends too! :icon_smile_big:

Math is such a great thing.  I got the book Innumeracy right in front of me (this is just a simple lay person's math book).  I really regret not having the mastery of math to view it as art.  From what I understand, with a deep understanding comes a whole new perspective and respect for the beauty of it.   Kim

Have you taken the new National test.     It's slowly gaining steam.   It will eliminate the guys who want to carry 2 trade cards just because.   It's putting even more responsibility on the operator's shoulders.   I use to tell the carpenters and laborers that if I screw up they call your next of kin, if you screw up all you do is just cut a new piece of wood. :o
Quote

I've heard about the national test when I was at the OE union hall registering for the NYC test several years ago. If I was in the union and operating everyday for a living, I'm pretty sure I would be more familiar on what's going on with the national license. If it becomes available for me to take it, I will. The NYC written test was pretty involved with electrical, hydraulics and load graphs. The practical/field test was a walk in the park. Like I said, I keep the license's to be a bit more diversified in case I need employment - something to fall back on. It's fun too to play with the big toys too - cranes have always caught my attention. Same with aircraft.
...and absolutely about responsibilities laying on the operator's shoulders. It amazes me how many operators I've worked with do not confirm the loads they are lifting and check the cranes load charts. They rely to much on the Super's judgement. I sometimes check our Super's judgment with lifting some loads and I have found many that try to go beyond the envelop and not taking wind loads or barge listing on a barge mounted crane - serious stuff!! :icon_smile_dead:

Underwear model.  It would be just like when I was unemployd, except that someone would be taking photos of me sitting around in my underwear, and I'd get paid.

If you call, Living on 150 acres thats paid for. Waking up in the morning. Walking across your back yard to your shop. Restoring all differant kinds of muscle cars and building street rods. Coming and going as you please. Deciding what your going to do that day. Spending other peoples money on beautiful cars. Then I guess I have my dream job. But I ask you. If you really enjoy what you do, is it really a job?

Don't get me wrong. It wasn't just handed to me. I have worked hard all my life and started very young. Also, its not always fun and games. But for the most part I enjoy my life. The best is just around the corner.

My dream job -Helicopter pilot

Then again I do enjoy my job as a Intencive care nurse, but right now my job feels more routine and I feel like im not lerning anything new, maby its time to do something else, maby change what ward i work at. ER would be interesting for a while, but I dont like the stress and that you dont have enough time with the patients there. Working as an ambulance medic would also be an interesting option...

My dream job would be a race car driver in NASCAR. Something more realistic would be a lawyer.

When I was young I thought about being a stuntdriver. I grew up driving  boats and minibikes, started driving a car at 13, a friend had 100+ acres of field and wood roads so we had lots of places to get in trouble. I got myself in and out of situations with cars and boats that would make my friends eyes pop out.  In my street racing days (2 miles chases, not this 1/4 mile stuff) my 280Z killed any muscle car that I raced (sorry :icon_smile_blackeye:).

Dream job= rock star. The thought of taking a shower while 7 naked beautiful woman wash me down brings a smile to my face. :icon_smile_approve:
