J 440=1973 model year 440
maltese cross and X=.010" under crankshaft
7   1   could be a build day and shift number, but I'm not sure
3698830-440-5 is a 1973-78 model year 440
11-22-72 is the casting date

As this is a '73 model year it still should have the forged steel crank. If it came from a manual transmission car or truck, the crank will be drilled for the pilot bushing as well. HP engines in those years also had what we call 6-pack rods. It might not even be stamped HP and still have the rods.

I agree, but to clarify a 73 would have a CAST crank, UNLESS manual trans, HP, or something special (as you mentioned).

You may be correct, 1973 was a transitional year for the 440s.

But, because there is no 'E' stamp with the 440 and because every 440 I have pulled from a 1973 passenger car has been a forged crank engine, I feel he has a good chance of it being a forged crank.

If the vibration damper is part #3577785 he has a cast crank, 3614371=forged non-HP, 3614372=forged w/HP.

it does have an E on the top pad  the damper is the thicker one   thanks

what could this be out of?

It could be from a B or C body. Check the VIN on the passengers side. The plant designation will help narrow it down.
Seeking information on '69 St. Louis plant VINs, SPDs and VONs. Buld sheets and tag pictures appreciated. Over 3,000 on file thanks to people like you.
