Jose Luis Ochoa, 35, of Lamont, California, was killed by his own rooster. He even armed the bird with the knives that caused his mortal wound.

Fighting animals is horrific, in my opinion. Our relationship with animals is multi-faceted and complex, but one thing that remains steadfast is that it is unconscionable to use an animal's own nature to risk its life or its opponent's life. It is telling of the nature of the human who chooses this form of 'entertainment.'

That being said, it is horrific that this event unfolded in the way that it did, and that a man died as a result. But Karma is said to work that way, by some. Others would say it's just irony and coincidence. It's sad all around, if you ask me, and I hope it makes some reconsider their 'entertainment.'

So, the story goes:

Mr. Ochoa was declared dead at a hospital about two hours after he was injured in neighboring Tulare County on Jan. 30, the Kern County coroner said. He had been stabbed in the calf by a rooster armed with knives, and several dead roosters and other evidence of cock-fighting were found at the scene.

According to Kern County Superior Court records, Ochoa paid $370 in fines in 2010, pleading no contest to one count of owning or training an animal for fighting. A second offense would have been considered a felony under California law.

Down here in Puerto Rico cock fighting is right up there on the list of island spectator sports. I think it's disgusting myself, but I've heard of families going as a family night out kind of thing, like a baseball or hockey game.
