This is the promblem if the temp gauge is pluged into the sending unit the gauge spikes with the car cold. You un plug it the the gauge goes where it belong's back to normal plug it back in off it goes..The gauge is fine none of the others do that just temp.any ideas?

sounds like the sending unit is grounded internally. thus spiking the gauge when hooked up...

does this even happen when the car is off and the ign switch is turned on ? if so it sounds like you have a bad sender.

Where did you get the sending unit? I had a problem where my temp gauge would peg the hot side. I went through 3 sending units once. I got them from my local parts auto store. I used a good ole' fashion round cooking thermometer to verify my coolant temperature as it heated up. It showed that my coolant temp was 160 degrees at idle. I went to my local Dodge dealership and got another sending unit, but this one was from MaMopar. Voila.... It worked perfectly. Seems the aftermarket units don't have their bi-metalllic internals calibrated properly.
