Ever lie to your boss or your spouse so you could attend a car show?

I know the stereotype is someone calling in sick to go fishing, but have you ever done something similar to go to a car show?  I did one time tell an employer I had a family reunion to go to that was out of town not too many years ago.  There was also one time when I called in sick from the Mopar Nats.  I was able to get the Thursday off but not the Friday.  Technically my hangover should have qualified as "sick" so I'm not so sure that one was a lie.
I'm not sure I've ever had to do it to my wife but she's usually glad to get rid of me anyway.

I take 1/2 days on Fridays from May 1st till Sept 1st... Or believe me, I'd be using every excuse in the book!

Magnumcharger

Yes....I'm bad.
Last fall I was deployed to Cold Lake Alberta to augment the NDT shop, which was short on qualified senior technicians.
So I was paid well to drive all the way across the country from Nova Scotia just to spend the month there helping out.

And I had alterior motives....

The Base was hosting an event called "Race the Base" where numerous exotic cars were there to race CF-18 Fighter Jets, on August 26-27.
I made some arrangements with a friend of a friend, and got VIP tickets to both days, and volunteered to photograph the event for "Canadian Hot Rods" magazine.

As the first day was on a Friday....I called in sick.

Yeah, I'm a scoundrel! - But how often do you get to lay on the side of a runway and have a Ferrari Enzo scream by you at 360km/h?

Yes Eldon, sometimes its better to beg for forgiveness than to ask for permission. I did catch up on all of my inspections on Thursday prior, just to be certain the shop wouldn't be hurting.

This car was sold many years ago to somebody in Wisconsin. I now am retired and living in Florida.

  For sure if you're slagging off work you likely need to lie to them both.

vancamp

ive been self employed for about 20 years so i have to day no to lying to get a day off, but i have scheduled some of my jobs around car shows and races.

As I am my own boss, no. To my wife, no also. She like cars, and aside from a few eye rolls occasionally, says have a good time.  ;)

So Ghoste, it seems like you are starting even more threads than usual.  :scratchchin:  Is the 20,000 post plateau keeping you awake at night?

No, but it has been a very slow week so I'm sure boredom is a factor.

So...my friend Kori happened to get a copy of "Canadian Hot Rods" before I did, and scanned a couple of the pages of my pictures. Apparently, there is six of them with my shots in this issue!
Was it worth it to call in "sick" to get the opportunity to do this?

Yes.

Did I get in shit?

Yes.

Do I care?

No. :icon_smile_big:

after 56 years of marriage i lie all the time and tell them what they want to know

Old Moparz

Years ago I would tell a former employer that I was going away to see an elder relative, & that I had to make sure that I also said I had booked a room, a flight, & reserved a rental car. I'd never say it was a car show because to them it wouldn't be logical. The reservation thing was a must because this scumbag, who NEVER approved overtime, would find things that needed to be done on weekends people had plans. It was in their nature to do this crap because they could & some people would cancel plans & stay to do meaningless crap.

As far as my wife, she almost always goes with me, so there is no need to lie about it.  :icon_smile_big:

I would be telling the lie to myself.  I like being the boss!   ;D
Tomorrow is promised to NOBODY . . . .

ChgrSteve67

My boss is a car guy (owns a Ford Cobra but I don't hold it against him) and I tell him the truth.
He has never had a problem with cutting out early or taking the day off for a car function as long as nothing major is going on.

There is a car show along the coast this year called "Pacific Coast Dream Machines" we are going to attend together. He has already said its going to be a three day weekend.

I don't have any current pictures of his car. He took it apart and had it painted this winter and is almost done reassembling.
It will be unvailed at the Sacramento Autorama next weekend along with a few other Shelby cars in one big display.
I'm hoping to get some new pictures of it then.

i am self employed so i dont have to lie. but i have to miss alot of shows because i have work booked and have to get it done. cant call in sick and my customers need there work done so they can get back in there house. being self employed sometimes sucks.  but only sometimes.

BlueSS454

I don't.  I have all my long distance trips planned out every year and I put in for the appropriate days off.  I just say I'm going to TN or NY or OH for a car show see ya on Monday.

I never lied to go to a car show. But one job, I put in 9 months in advance for Carlisle. The day before I was suppose to be off. She said I couldn't have off. So I quit.

Ghoste

That's dedication!  :2thumbs: :2thumbs:  :METAL:

(fwiw I've been prepared to do that in the past at a couple of crappy jobs where I expected that very scenario to play out but it never came to pass)

69_500

Sure I have. Lets see I only had 2 weeks of vacation at one job and they wouldn't let you bust them up so we took family vacations on those two weeks. Then I used my 5 sick days to attend various car shows. Funny how I was always sick on a Friday. I'd come home from work on Thursday load up the car and head off to the car show. The last 3 times I have been to Carlisle I have called in sick while on the Turnpike. What are they going to do tell me to turn around and come in? I mean it would take me 9 hours to get back home by that point.
