Forgive me for being nosey Frank, but are you planning on putting hideaway's on your 73? or do you plan to put the emblem somewhere else? (I do actually have a reason for asking this)

FLG

Yes I am putting hideaways on. Not being nosey, but I gotta ask you as well..what's your angle? Lool!

mikesbbody

Well it's like this Frank, I'm sure you know that 71-72 Hideaway's look different and I don't know what year you plan to put on your Charger. I have 72's on my 72 SE but I prefer the look of 71's which have no vertical grill lines on the Headlight part and less vertical Grill lines on the inner pieces (useless trivia time) 71's have 3 vertical grill lines vs 72's having 7 that is on the "inner" part of the hideaway (Grill) The headlight part as you know the 71's have no vertical Grill lines but the 72's again have 7 (same as the inner part)
Now I'm thinking apart from these difference's they are the same? surely it's possible to make 72 Hideaway's into 71's by removing the Vertical Grill lines from the Headlight door, and removing 4 of the 7 Vertical Grill lines from the inner Grill and there you go! 72's converted into 71's but...I asked about the emblem because there is no emblem on 72 Hideaway's at all so options are 1. go without it or 2. find the right emblem and position it on the driver's side Headlight door (in the correct position) I was happy to hear that this emblem is available because it's probably the only way (due to cost etc) that i will ever have 71 hideaways on my Charger.
ps, I wouldn't be talking a "Hack Job" it would be done professionally buy a engineer friend of mine so no F..K up's
Sorry to go on but I wanted to put my idea out there as I think it's doable and 71 hideaways cost quite a bit more than 72's
Comments anyone? have i overlooked anything?

FLG

Know what ya mean, I much prefer the look of 71s...never seeing 2s in person I can't say if its doable or not but the dodge name plate sits on a flat plate, its not simply attatched to the grilles. I can take a pic for you if need be.

If I'd go to fit hideaways, would it be 71s... but, is not on plans. BY NOW I want to keep the 74 just like a 74... the only non 74 part it has are the 150 speedo, the variable wiper switch ( and related plugs ) the knob with screw instead the later what doesn't use an screw.... OH and the wiper motor is 72 PN. but nothing of that affect on the 74 look

I even found the "iconed" cluster bezel.

Then also the electrical trunk release, what is lates Mopars kind

Frank, I would love to see that plate you talk of that the Dodge emblem attaches too  :2thumbs: I'm sure that too can be made up being Overseas we are great improvisors I feel Nacho's pain when it comes to Shipping etc if I convert the 72's to look like 71 Hideaway's maybe I wouldn't bother with the Emblem my long term plan is to make my 72 into a 71 (even changing the sidemarker lights) that requires partial 71 Fenders and quarters (to graft into the 72 quarters and Fenders) I would like to do this because I prefer the look of the 71 over the 72 (not just the Hideaways) I have some 71 RT Tailights also. I know what I have to get I know it will take time and $ since my car is "just" a 72 SE I have no problems making it into the car I prefer. Also remove the side window filler "plug" that 72 SE;s have I just need interior sail panels from a regular 72, or any 71 for this modification.
If I had a 73-74 I'd do what your doing Frank (Hideaway's and Tailights) Bulge hood and leave it at that Nacho, I like something about each year of the 3rd gen 71-74 they all have their good points I think. I love learning new things about these car's from Guy's like you frank and nacho

bull

Buy a 2nd gen and you won't have to worry about it. :2thumbs:

mikesbbody

That's the thing Bull, I consider Hideaway's to be part of a Charger's identity just not the same without them IMO.
Although I'm a 3rd gen Guy, I think Hideaway's looked best on the 2nd Gen  :Twocents:

The face of it is a bit different than the one on my '71 hideaway emblem, other than that everything else is pretty close. When I can relocate mine I'll post a pic.

Very nice.  :2thumbs: What type of Argent paint did you use on the grille surrounds? Looks good.

It's been a few years since and I'm not sure, but I think it was silver argent from Year One.
Where it's painted black, I used a Dermal tool to grind off the flaking chrome around the pits and then painted it black. The ground out pits look much better than peeling chrome plating.
