It went for below estimate and below it's price the last time it sold (which was just before the last musclecar price drop).  Given the comments I heard which largely echoed those around here that it should have been restored with it's original engine I wonder if the hammer would have been different had the car not been altered?

650,000 dollars is a lot of money no matter how you look at it.  Especially since it doesn't reflect a design you would see driving down the road.  It's a custom car that looks nothing like what a Charger came to be.  :Twocents:
2nd gen is so much better looking.  :yesnod:
This car was sold many years ago to somebody in Wisconsin. I now am retired and living in Florida.

 Looks more like a 64 Polara or maybe a dart...Either way...YUCK

:iagree: If that were only second gen Charger in the world up there the auction would still be going.

How about a 65 Polara.  ;)

(BTW, the Charger II and the Charger III didn't really look anything like the 2nd gen either.  For that matter, neither did the 99 concept.  )

One of the few production cars that actually ended up looking like it's radical concept car was the Viper. Really the only one I can think of.

This comparison is more to the point....

The Charger 1 is not doing badly, it's just failing to do better than other cars of its era.  The early 60s and late 60s car might have shared a lot of chassis and drivetrain components but they aren't in the same category in terms of aging well.  Nothing else compares to the late 60s.

Hmm, I wonder if the Corvette, GTO, and Mustang crowd would fully agree? :scratchchin:

Ha. So true. I think the crazy crazy price fad has past.

Ghoste

I wonder though, given the styling fads of 1965 when that car was made, if Chrysler had not done it and gotten good feedback for it if there would even be a 2nd gen Charger?

Mikesmoparperformance

I love that car!  650.000 nice price for it! :smash::drool5: very special car! about the 99 concept car it looks more like the 68 and 69 chargers yes it had 4 doors. :icon_smile_big:
But I looks nicer the new charger will ever do! that dodge got for 2011 :rotz:
And ofcourse I must be a 2door not a 4door, a 4 door charger is not a charger to me! :rotz:

I would love the see a New charger like this!

Actually, the '99 concepts looked a lot like the second generation chargers.  It had the bdoy lines, the rear end, and the back window area even looked like a '68 to '70 a little bit.

Ghoste

Except for an echo of the 2nd gen I see far far more 3rd gen in the 99 concept personally.  Actually that was the nice thing about the 99, if it had to be a four door then at least that one looked like an evolution of the earlier cars.

UH60L

I agree.  I could have lived with that.

And, to be honest, if Dodge had come out with the 2011 version back in 2006, i think there would have been alot less resistance.  Heck, I might have even bought one.

I think the 2006 to 2010 should have been called Coronet.  From there the possibilities for reviving actual retro muscle cars would have been endless.  Challenger not fast enough for the mustang crowd, here's a retro 2 door charger.  What, gotta have a 'cuda, hey check out this 'cuda concept, built as a slight shorter but more powerful  version of the challenger.  What, a midsize, well we got this car called a duster.....

Now, not so much.  We'll be lucky if the challenger stays retro, and the charger becomes more charger-esque, in my opinion.  Though, there is a rumor/discussion of an official "cuda being produced.  I'll believe it when I see it.

Ghoste

I'd be shocked if they did a Cuda in light of what's coming as far as CAFE and such.  There can't be much of a business model for it.  I agree on the Callenger and Charger too.  In fact we'll be lucky if the Challenger doesn't vanish completely in a few years and the Charger become downsized.

As you know it only had a 4 year run the first time.

Okay.  It was still a short one then and it'll be short for the Challenger again this time and yes I'm aware of the MItsuchally.

What a waste of 650,000 greenbacks
