I have a 1969 Charger that I am restoring. The bolts are in good shape just rusty. Is there anything I can do to clean them up? I would rather not use a wire wheel for the sake of time.

shot blast  or drop them in acid  or wire wheel on a bench grinder   :yesnod:  best results will be a mixture of all three  :yesnod:  :Twocents:

Let them sit in a cup of Evaporust overnight.  Easiest way to remove rust IMO.

Is there anything you can get at you local hardware store?

chargd72

I've seen Evaporust at Autozone, Advance Auto, Tractor Supply Co and I think even Walmart.

Yep use muriatic acid! You can get it locally. Co thing is it kills rust in seconds but won really mess with paint.

X2....muriatic acid is about 8 bucks a gallon, works great. Sometimes you do have to let the part soak a while depending on how rusty it is. Also be sure to have you some baking soda/water mixture to wash the parts in afterwards to neutralize the acid.

Yes that's a VERY important part! Otherwise it will start rusting again as soon as it dries!  :brickwall:

I just picked up 2 gallons of evaporust at tractor supply in the past 2 weeks,,,,,, cost me right at $30 a gallon.

I think Harbor Freight has it to at about the same price point, I just prefered to NOT use HF if I can

After reading hemigeno's reply here:

I ordered 5 gallon buckets of Evapo-Rust online for $70 each ($14 per gallon). It's concentrated and you have to mix it but shipping was cheap due to the lighter weight. If you're using a lot it's definitely a good way to save money.

Sarcasm detector, that's a real good invention.

i have had great luck with Evap o rust.

I'm a big user of Evaporust but when I'm feeling a little cheap I do the Vinegar, Realemon Juice and salt mixture which works well. I might start some parts off in this mixture rinse them off and then put them in the evaporust.

I've seen you post this recipe up before and wondered what's your mixture ratio?  Is the salt necessary?  You'd think it would promote corrosion.  :scratchchin:

POR-15's literature says their Prep & Ready product can be used to remove rust if left in it to soak.

Isnt there a rock tumbler type machine that you can clean hardware with ?

tricky lugnuts

Economy Tumbler, from Eastwood, $99:

Looks neat - never used one, though. They sell bigger and more expensive ones. And the Por15 metal prep stuff in my opinion does a GREAT job of cleaning up rust, from what I've seen . . . You just brush on a little bit and it eats all the rust away - but I've only used it areas like the firewall or or body panels.

My tumbler does not do near as good a job as evap o rust

Got the recipe of Moparts.

1/2 gallon vinegar
1/3 cup of salt
1 real lemon lemon juice

The salt may not be neccessary, as soon as I see it's basically removed the rust I remove the part(s) and rinse them and then paint/coat them.

Absolutely.

$29/gallon at Harbor Freight, it isn't corrosive, can re-use over and over, doesn't stink up the place. Works overnight on any but the deepest pits.
