Hello, I have a chance to buy an 8 3/4 rear end out of a 1972 Dodge Coronet B Body and it has a 2.76 gear ratio. I can get it for $120.00 here locally. It is a complete set-up minus the brake drum covers. Just wondering if it's worth buying it at that price. It's something that I don't need anytime soon but it could be a viable back up.

Thanks

The axle you speak of is different from the 68-70 axle. The 71-72 unit is wider by several inches. If you want a spare for the gold car in the picture, you are limited to the 68-70 versions if you want a spare that is a direct bolt in.
$120 is a good price for the axle but there isn't much from it that directlt fits besides the 3rd member AND it is the least desireable ratio for performance. If you thought you'd want to cut the housing, move the spring mounts and buy new axle shafts, you'd be spending another $500 or more to make the $120 axle fit your car. You would be much better off paying $175-200 for a 68-70 axle.   :2thumbs:

Thanks Kern Dog

So is it worth it for someone needing a 8.75 rear end for 71-74 B Body cars? Or is the 72 Coronet axle even wider than the 3rd gen Chargers/Roadrunners?

Thanks

It fits the Charger/Coronet/Satellite cars. It just doesn't fit yours or mine.

I'm the king of tall gears and 2:76 is too much even for me.  Good price for the whole unit though!
Extraordinary claims require extraordinary evidence.

I bought one from a self serve junkyard several years ago and thought I scored big after paying $80 for it. Later I learned that they were wider than the 68-70 cars. I sold it for $125 in 2009. NOW I read that the 71-74 Charger/Road Runner cars are gaining in popularity and that axle can bring $500 or more.
This is one of the many reasons that I'd make a terrible financial advisor.
I've sold a few things at low ball prices. I've scrapped or tossed some parts that I never thought would be worth anything. Time sure is a bitch of a teacher!
