Anyone know if these exist? I know this is not the best forum for this but I mite be needing one. I know that new process took the 833 and made the NP440 which was available in 4wd and had a 0.73 4th gear. Any help would be greatly appreciated

Unless you could get away with some sort of Divorced Transfer case, and even then, I think it would have to be an A-Body for it's short tail shaft, There were no factory A-833 4WD trans' that I know of...All these were commonly called "Big truck" type trans' as the shifter goes in the top...

I thought they did but I guess not. Doesn't mean you can't do it. Here's some other info:

If you are looking for a 4wd manual with overdrive for a truck try finding a NV4500 5 speed from a 92-93 with a 360 gasser. They will bolt up to most Dodge transfer cases except the fulltime NP203.

Thanks for the tip. The nv4500 weights 195# tho. Im trying to find something that weighs a lot less than that

Anyone know what is actually inside the tail shaft housing of one of those? Like are they actually needed? Im thinking that I may be able to just make my own steel tailshaft and have the output shaft modified to bolt a t case to it

np445 ,435 but to my knowledge they are non OD trans  you could adapt a gearvendors set up

also maybe the NV3550  or the AX-15 could work

a833 tailshaft is empty, except for the tailshaft and speedo drive. It would be easy enough to adapt a transfer case with a custom shaft.

I've toyed with the idea of a 4x4 rail job with Dana 44 axles.

Not totally sure what your project is but here is a thought. If you did happen to find one of those Chevy NP440 setups for a 4wd you mentioned it could be possible to just use a Chrysler input shaft out of a standard 833 and then you could use any Dodge bellhousing. You could also keep the Chevy transfer case as they are passenger side drop back in the 80's like Dodge.

You could shorten the output shaft and make a tail housing that will match your transfer case. The tail housing holds the output shaft bearing in place and the rear bushing and seal keep the shaft and yoke from wobbling along with sealing in lube. Automatic or Manuel has to have a way to keep the tail end of the output shaft in line. Your better off getting the trans and transfer case from a late model Dakota or half ton 4X4, engine size don't matter it's a one size fits all. Oh with the late model you just remove the spend senor and plug in your speedo adapter.

I am heavily leaning towards shortening the output shaft and making my own tail housing for an a-833.

From what i read online, the ax-15 and the nv3500 5 speeds are not built to handle very much power. Im looking around the 500ft/tq range

edit:I just checked around google a little, found the standard 3500 rated to 300ft/lb, HD version good to 340. Ive read about guys running 600ft/lb thru a 833 with a spool and slicks without breakage. That kind of strength in a trans that weighs 120# is just too great to pass up. Then the aluminum front case one I have a line on weighs even less.
