Rare Mustang Gauge??? Cobra Accelerometer

I found this gauge in my garage I had forgotten about.  Have had it laying around for about 34 yrs.  Used it a short while in my 71 Charger when I was 16yrs old. Can't remember originally where I got it from and the only info. I saw was from a couple old web car pic posts and an add.  Measures your acceleration force in G's. Someone had one like it on Ebay listed as a "rare Carroll Shelby Gauge" and priced it at $1300   in 08.  Saw it mounted in a 65-66 Mustang pic.  Seems a little unbelievable to me but any Mustang folks got any knowledge on it?  If it is a hard to find item I guess sometimes you just don't realize what you got kickin around on the shelf or think is junk.  I thought it was an interesting gauge to share as I don't see them on anything in shows here.  I'm gonna try my luck on Ebay with it as I'm over budget on my Bird clone.

Ebay can be a hard thing to figure out sometimes.  I've got $20,000 new machinery equipment I can't get 2K for but other machine parts I bought for $3 at one auction and sold them on Ebay within 4 mins of listing them for a nice profit.  Put on some hard to find nice car stuff and don't get a bid yet I pulled out some broken car parts I tossed in my trash after cleaning up and posted just in case someone needed a piece of it cheap and ends up in a bidding war  :shruggy:. The machine parts I buy and try to make some hobby money but mostly the car stuff is things I've just had for spares for my own use and figure its time to turn loose to buy something I need.  Either way Ebay seems to getting too high on fee charges to make it sometimes not worth the effort especially when the paypal charges more fees to collect even on the shipping costs. :RantExplode:

Man rare or not that is way cool! Be sure to post a link to the auction :2thumbs:
Well here it is.  Maybe I'll get lucky and it will pay for a whole new set of gauges for my custom dash   :icon_smile_big:.

I haven't seen one of those either. Is it made by a company we've heard of, like Sun or Stewart Warner or similar?
Judging from the last pic in your ad, it looks like the needle moves as the gauge is moved? So I assume there's no wires going to it & that it's probably got a weight inside that moves the needles as the gauge is moved...that would make sense, I guess.

The Aquamax...yes, this bike spent 2 nights underwater one weekend. (Not my doing), but it gained the name, and has since become pseudo-famous. :)

oldcarnut

Its made by Shelby American.  The needle moves with gauge movement.  I think you position the mount so that it's on zero at park.  I posted a pic of the movement which doesn't seem that complicated but interesting.  I guess they used duct tape back then to hold the plastic in place for assy. The face bezel just sorta slip snaps on. Already doubled my start price and got a couple people already asking to end it early.  I don't know how many people are watching it from here for curosity but looks like a lot of interest so far :popcrn:.  Maybe I ought to start cleaning up some of them old tachometers laying on the shelf
Heres a couple of links to where I was able to get my info. on it

I put in my truck and tested it out yesterday.  Its actually very responsive to the touch of the gas pedal or letting off it for being as simple as it looks.  Any kind of drag whether its from the drivetrain or brakes will make it drop.  I bet it would make a good tool to use for shift points.  I reckon that's what it was originally made for in the Shelby's.  The new ones look to be all electronic.   I'll try and contact some more of the Ford club guys around here to see if they got any info on it.  Too bad its not a Mopar related item or we might could have had some interesting stories.

First of all, that's a really cool find.

Secondly, for those of you who have iPhones/Touches, there's a free app made by BMW called the M Power Meter that uses the built-in accelerometers to give you a readout of speed, acceleration, lateral G, 0-60 time, etc.  Check it out: http://www.bmw.com/com/en/newvehicles/mseries/x5m/2009/g_meter.html

Sorry for the thread hijack, but I think the app is definitely worth the free download.

There's a similar app for the Droid. All these new "smart" phones have accelerometers.

I have one called RideLogger (designed for motorcycles) but there's also SpeedView Pro, Speedometer Pro, and Car Performance which all look like they'll do similar things.

yea...I have been watching it also...wish I had about 10 of those meters

oldcarnut

Someone called and offered me $450 for it a couple hours ago to end it early.  As much as I would have liked the cash I didn't think it would have been the right thing to do after telling some others I was going to let it ride.  If he'd been the only one interested and near the beginning then maybe  :scratchchin:  I hope it don't bite me in the behind but thats the way it goes sometimes.  I don't like when it happens to me when I'm bidding on something then it all of a sudden it's no longer avail. at the last minute.  I believe what you do to others eventually comes back to you. Yep I wish I had a couple of them too.  Now I feel incentive to pull out the rest of the boxes and drawers to see what I got out there.  47 watching.  I wonder how many of that is from here.

FLG

Imo he's only offering it to you because he feels its going to go higher than that...if he wants it why don't he bid up to 450 or snipe it for 450. :shruggy:
