Having a bit of trouble with this one... hoping someone can help.   :2thumbs:  I need to replace the high pressure power steering hose on my 68 Charger (383 727). :yesnod:  I reviewed a few threads on this before heading down to my local auto parts store (as I've come to realize there's some pretty good advise/tips on parts and work in this community  :2thumbs:).

After viewing these, I was able to identify that I have a federal pump.  The hose that's on my car right now fits real nice (good clearances through the magnum exhaust manifolds, vacuum box etc.), so I think its correct for the car (the tubes at the ends are fairly long with quite a few bends... especially the end that attaches to the pump).

One post I read suggusted no one makes that hose any more, so when my local auto supplier said they located one just a day away, I was cautiously optomistic.  Went to pick it up the next day and it's not the right one.  :eek2:  Went back into some more threads, found one with a picture that showed a hose that looked like it was the same one that I need, but that was identified as a saginaw hose.   :shruggy:  Looked around at some of the parts suppliers on-line that I got from a few other threads but can't find the hose I'm after.

Preciate any help (or humour ) anyone can throw my way.

ps.  I'm a newbie... I'll see if I can include the post with the picture of the hose I need shortly.   :scope:

Cheers,

Take the old one off to  a hose place and they will make one up.

What is it about the hose you got that's wrong?

68neverlate

It's leaking fluid at the middle connection...

Didn't even consider that the old fittings could be re-used... preciate the suggestion DU.    I'm guessing you might be used to looking for alternatives being where you are and all.  Or are there MOPAR suppliers in Aus??  :shruggy:

If anyone still wants to chime in and answer my question about whether these hoses are available new anywhere though, I'd still be interested...  :yesnod:

Cheers mate...

I don't think the old fittings can be reused as they are compressed onto the hose ends.

If it were me I would give Steer and Gear a call and ask for Tom. He can help you figure out exactly what kind of pump you have which in turn will help you figure out what hose you need. And then they could probably sell you the right hose too. The reason I say to figure out which pump you have is because the Federal and TRW pumps are hard to tell apart. And, to top it off, there are two different types of TRW pumps.

Hmmm... thought for sure I had a federal.  :icon_smile_blackeye: Come to think of it, I do remember seeing a thread with a picture of both a TRW and a federal pump, and they did look a lot alike.  But I didn't think the TRW was a Charger factory pump on a 68 (thought someone replaced the original federal with the TRW that came out of something else).  My manufacture date is late in the year... not sure if that narrows it down any??   :shruggy:

I'll give Tom a call and see what he says.  Thanks for the info Bull... :yesnod:

ps Nice ride!   :2thumbs:

Having said all that above, I would think the pressure hoses would all be very similar if not the same. :shruggy: Anyway, call Tom. I'm no expert.

Pertek and total hose are just one of many companies in Australia they will get your old hose and re use what they can, they also have heaps of fittings in stock to match up. you would have to have similar companies around your area that do the same thing.

Thanks guys.  Appreciate the replies.  I'll let you know what happens...   :yesnod:

Just an update on this guys... I talked with Tom at Steer and Gear last week.  He told me that this was one of those MOPAR mix and match party things... they installed federal, saginaw and TRW power steering pumps in the Chargers.  It sounds like they put in whatever they had at the time of assembly, but...   :shruggy:

He confirmed that the federal and TRWs look a lot alike.  He also said one way of telling them apart is the fitting on the pump side of the high pressure hose.  The TRW has a 5/8" flared male fitting whereas the federals use an "O" ring design.  Another way to tell is in the shaft size (see size DOES matter!  :hah:), the TRW has a 3/4" shaft with a press on pulley, whereas the federals have a 5/8" shaft "threaded through the centre".   :shruggy:  Just quoting the notes I took when I talked with Tom.  By the way, Tom spend the better part of 15 minutes helping me with all this even though he knew he wasn't going to be able to sell anything to me.  He was great!  I'm totally impressed!  I'll be bringing future business his way for sure!   :2thumbs:

Turns our my high pressure hose has the flared male fitting, so I guess that means I have a TRW pump.  As I mentioned above Tom doesn't have a high pressure hose for that and when I described what was in the car, he said he hasn't seen or heard anything like that before.  I ended up calling a local hydraulic shop up like you suggested Down Under and they made up a new hose for me using the ends off my old one (the ends swivel so I can set the correct angles when I re-install).  New one's rated at 4,000 psi... a little overkill for a 100psi application, but at least I'm back in business.  Now, to find a reseal kit for my pump...  :yesnod:

Thanks again for the help guys!   :2thumbs:

Yea, those guys are top notch. Tom is a big help and is obviously smart enough to know that helping people, with or without a sale, is good advertising in a world where news travels fast. Anyway, glad you got it figured out. :2thumbs:
