I did not see anyone mention it here so I thought I would.  Major Richard Winters passed away a few days ago.  He had Parkinson's for some time, he was 92.  The story of Major Winters was brought to many of us through the HBO series, Band of Brothers.  This is truly a great loss for the country. It is sad to see this generation go as we can learn a lot from them.

God Bless you Major Winters, you will be deeply missed.

Didn't hear that. He was a great man and lived a long life....Think about all those who served and never got a ounce of recognition.

As a WWII war buff. I was sadden by his passing. He left a wonderful legacy. The Band Off Brothers is my all time favorite war movie. I have the box set.

Agreed.  I had the Band of Brothers box set at one time too.  It went with the ex-wife, which is fair.  She wanted it, so I had gotten it for her for Christmas one year.

Even though I've watched the series a couple million times I picked the book out of a bargain bin.  Most of the time you find the movie dissapointing after reading the book.
But, in this case, it actually made the series much better by providing context/background to the situations, battles, storylines, that don't translate well to tv.
If you like the series you'll read the book in a couple of days.

First off, I'm sorry to hear of Major Winters' passing. He & so many thousands like him are exactly why they are considered the greatest generation, and sadly, we're losing more of them every day.  :patriot:

I've got the boxed set too & watch it often. I haven't read that book, because the movie was good enough for me, but I have read this one & would recommend it to anyone...

The Aquamax...yes, this bike spent 2 nights underwater one weekend. (Not my doing), but it gained the name, and has since become pseudo-famous. :)

"We were Soldiers" in one of my favorite movies....In the second half of the book (which is not covered in the movie) The U.S. Army really got clobbered.  It's a must read book.  :Twocents:

I just heard this sad news today. :'( He was a great American hero and a great leader to the men of Easy Company. Every time one of these awesome WWII vets dies I feel like another piece of what made America great dies with him.

Born in '16.  He would have been a bit of an old timer for WWII let alone a specialized unit like the 101st.  That generation was just flat out tough.

It's interesting how many of the WWII vets didn't speak much (if ever) about their experiences. I realize that it was quite a traumatic thing to live through, but I find it interesting how many of them didn't say squat about it.

RIP, Mr. Mauser. :patriot:

I think people were raised a lot different back then too. Now days someone stubs their toe and they cry about it to everyone who will listen and give them sympathy but back then people knew that life was tough and you just had to get through it to succeed. Everyone had it tough back then unlike today. Now someone falls into a fountain and breaks their cell phone and immediately they're filing lawsuits, whining all over the internet, blaming everything on their parents and talking about their disabilities. :'( :'( Poor babies.

The US is no longer comprised of team players who are in it for the good of the nation. It's now mostly comprised of crybabies who care about nothing but getting theirs and screwing everyone they need to to get it. It's every man for himself and ask not what I can do for my country, but rather what can my country do for me.
