Weird '68 VIN#

So, I'm working on my Daytona clone today and needed a small piece of metal, so I go rooting around in my junk pile and came across a chunk of quarter panel off of a '68 Charger.  This chunk was cut off a 68 Charger I parted out, and then politely crushed about 15 Years ago. I had cut off the top of the quarter where the  flip top gas cap goes and saved it. In the process I had also saved the area of the trunk opening where the gasket goes, So I got to scraping around on it, spotted the numbers and decided to sandblast it and see what the #'s were, here they are... What's up with that "X" ?

That's the super secret code for the ultra rare 592 Hemi option that was equiped with a blower that MOPAR was thinking of building. They put it in ONE ultra rare 1 of 1 Charger that had every option available at the time. And thanks to you has been crushed 15 years ago and was the only surving model made of this car.  Way to go for crushing a super rare legend that could have brought in millions.

Thanks, Jim it must be a '68 thing     I'll have to check the '68 that I didn't crush   next time I'm at the barn...

the x is a 68 thing. no idea why either. the odd VIN is the order number, as opposed to the VIN #. took me forever to realize this, as i just assumed my first few 68 had to be bogus cars as the rad support and trunk lip never matched the VIN # on the dash. even the fender tag is screwed up on 68's..

Its a sure way to tell you are working on a 68 part, the rad support, trunk lip and block start with B8X, Pretty
sure the 8 means 68 model year.

does that piece you cut off the 68 go all the way back to the tail panel? if so i know a guy looking for that top part of the quarter from the gas cap back yo the tail panel.

It did. Until yesterday afternoon, when I cut it up for my project.

The number stamped in the body prior to '69 is the Vehicle Order Number (VON) not the VIN.

The B stands for the Hamtramck assembly plant, the  8 denotes '68 and the X is the car line Charger. The last six digits are the sequence number which should match the core support and the fender tag.

Starting in '69 the partial VIN was stamped in the body and fender tag.
