So I pulled the sending unit out of tank, gas gauge was only reading 3/4 full when full. What or how do you fix the electrical connection to the mechanical float assy. Can you solder the flat strap to the unit or was there a rivet attaching it? Also the float is shot, where to get a good one of these. Has anyone cleaned out their gas tank and reused it. Mine is a little rusty on the inside but doesn't look real bad. Thanks all.

I'd get new ones. That sending unit looks pretty funky. The tank probably could be cleaned out and 'sealed', but if the inside of the tank looks like that sending unit I wouldn't chance it.

Nobody has tried to rebuild this thing? Is the ground strap spot welded on or soldered. I might have to give it a try.

It's just a matter of time till the tube gets a hole in it then your stranded, you will never get the sender to read right either.

thats not the ground strap on the sender ! thats the live /power wire !  its attached  to one end of the resistance wire scale thingy in side via a tiny brass rivet , & insulated from the housing by fiber type washers, , if you don't insulate correctaly ,  the gauge will read full or full off scale  :yesnod:

Thanks for the info tan top, it's the kind of answere I was looking for. I'm going to try and fix it myself first. After I wire brushed it and cleaned the inside of the tubes it looks ok to me. Just surface rust, no pitting. I'm hoping the same for the tank. I read somewhere here while searching about somebody who used electrolisis to clean the tank but I can't find out how they did it. Said it only took 2 days and was clean as a whistle. thanks again.

Nice eyes, neither do I. Just order a new unit  :eek2:

Well after soaking it in vinegar along with the gas tank I may do that. Maybe you or someone else can tell me which one of the many sending units I have looked at is the best. That is the one that doesn't have any fit issues, or have to be modified, and that reads correctely. One that one of you folks are currently using and that works. My gas tank is in the radiator shop getting boiled so I will be using it instead of buying a new one. Thanks.

What's up, nobody on this site has any recommendations for a good sending unit that they have bought .

Take some time and read this...........:  http://www.dodgecharger.com/forum/index.php/topic,57267.0.html

As for the float etc. I don't think it really matters too much. None of the repop sending units read right anyway.

As you will see in the tread I linked you can cure that with a little effort.

Thats a good idea Piston Freddy. The only thing wrong with mine is the hot ribbon came of the sender end. The hole in the ribbon is 1/4". The rivit is flushed off on the sender and is only about 1/16 dia, hard to fill but I might get it tommorow after I grow a third hand.

70 RT who did you buy yours off of and does it work for you? Thanks all.

You will end up spending 1/2 of what a new tank would cost trying to get the rust out and then coating the inside.  I got my tank from Mustang's Unlimited as I recall.  It was a Spectra Premium tank made in Canada.  I think it cost $160.  If you are determined to try electrolysis, you would need to fill the tank with arm & hammer WASHING soda and then insert a large iron electrode inside the tank and in the center.  Maybe a long iron rod of some type or a bare iron tube.  Connect this to battery charger--6 to 12 amp or so.  Don't use stainless steel for the electrode.  Then connect the batt chgr to the tank and the inserted electrode (which cannot be touching the tank inside).  Look on the net to see which is supposed to be hooked to + and which to -.  Let run for few days.  Then rinse, dry and coat inside.  Use the gas tank sealer from POR-15---------not POR-15 itself.  You need to do the inside of the fuel filler tube too---as well as the outside part that is rusted now.  The alternative is to try to deal with the rust with some type of acid and then seal.  I've even heard of folks putting a section of chain inside the tank and shaking to get the rust loose.
