Can someone tell me how to remove the fuel sending unit from a 68 charger 318 car, I believe it's the 5/16's unit, thses's one outlet and one electrical connector. Can it be removed with the gas tank installed or does the tank have to come out. Also, can you suggest a resource for a replacement unit, Summit have them for $45 and my local Pep Boy's want $101. Thanks.

The sending unit can be removed with the tank still installed. You just have to make sure the fuel level is below the neck when you remove the locking ring (hammer and flat bladed screwdriver, counter clockwise) or you will get a shower. Take off the hose and electrical connector first. Unlock the locking ring. Then just slowly snake the sending unit out, keeping the round rubber seal intact. I put my car on jacks to get enough room to get under the car. A relatively easy job.

What is wrong with the sending unit? A common problem is a leaky float that erroneously reads low all the time. They cost about $10.
