Now that I have your attention, what should I do about this?:

I have been chasing the leak in my diff for years, now that its been blasted I found it.  There is a hairline crack in the weld.  Is it fixable?  It ALMOST looks like it has been repaired before.  There are definitely two beads going on around that area.  If it has been repaired they did a really good job welding it.  Can I weld it from the inside?

Yes, you COULD weld it from the inside, but then again, it might crack again...Looks like someone's been having some fun at the local track with some steep gears, slicks, and a stroker motor......I'd replace the housing as they are pretty cheap...

NO BOOBIES........ :'(

yea...what a let down on Christmas Day...  :brickwall:

elacruze

To fix that, you'll have to ditch out the old weld, have it properly repaired by a knowledgeable and experienced welder, and probably weld a brace on for additional rigidity. Otherwise it will likely return as it did before.

Or find a different housing locally.

i would say first to produce the bouncing boobies, then check with a welder to grind it out and repair. you need to bevel to get penetration....which takes us back to the bouncing boobies :2thumbs:

Don't tell him how to fix it until the bouncing boobs arrive.

Looks like they just welded a bead on top of the crack. As mentioned above the proper way is to fix a crack is to gouge it out, then fill it in.
Oh yeah, and this is for no boobies :fu: :fu: :fu: :fu:

It's only an 8 3/4 housing  :Twocents:   You can find that stuff on craigslist and swap the guts in a day.     An extra day or 2 if you go get it blasted and painted / powdercoated.

And now back to those boobies you promised.  :drool5:

BOOBIES!!!  :o  OK, Now that were all happy, Mancini sells a reinforcement bracket for the axle housing that would help. You will want to cut a V grove along the split and build up the area with a few layers of weld. (Notice how I avoided using the terms "stiffener & crack")

Life isn't Father Knows Best anymore, it's a kick in the face on a saturday night with a steel toed grip kodiak work boot and a trip to the hospital all bloodied and bashed.....for reconstructive surgery. But, what doesn't kill us, makes us stronger, right?

greasyspider

Thanks guys, and your welcome!  I was kinda hoping for an invisible fix as the rear end is original to the car.
'71 Plum Crazy  R/T

nvrbdn

the fix could be mostly invisible if you groove it and weld properly. after welding grind it smooth. the weld on there was more like a surface weld that didnt penetrate. with a proper weld it will go all the way through the case.

:iagree:

If it adds considerable value to the car, the repair can be made inside and out, and dress/finish the outside. Still, the reason it cracked to begin with needs to be addressed-if the car is raced or abused with sticky tires it may come back again no matter what. Was the car ever in an accident?
