you mean the sockets side harness ? or the body harness ?

I have never know somebody reproducing any harnesses where sockets are attached ( fixed ) to tail lights.

What is the best way to replace those fixed sockets ?
BTW Nacho, the body wiring is the same, regardless of a R/T or not.  :D

FLG

Yes nahco,

The harness with sockets  :shruggy:

FLG

Apparently year one sells the harness with sockets for 149.99 pn RL68 called em to confirm they do come with sockets.

ACUDANUT

I bet it is a bitch to get the old ones out, without damaging the housing.  Also, If year one sells them, who makes them ?   One more thought, couldn't you tear apart a set from....say...a regular 71 or 72 housing and fix your R/T or Rallye taillights ?
Also, has the price of these lenses gone down any ?

FLG

I didn't think of that, curious who makes em for yo.

I could prob use the ones from my current non rt lights but id rather not destroy em. The rt harness is already hacked beyond fixing.

Are they removable in the sense they can be removed with some finess but can't be put back?

Yo sells a 68 repo harness with pics on there ebay ad, id imagine this harness looks similar?

ACUDANUT

If you do use a donor set, I think it is a one time installation. Because,  you will have to JB weld those sockets in.
What about those aftermarket lenses ?

FLG

The aftermarket lenses are nice but a bit pricey, still prob gonna wind up getting a set.

I just won a used harness of ebag for 20$...figure for that price it can't hurt.

71/72s sockets needs body/chassis ground... Is JB weld electroconductive ?... 73/74s are wired ground

Originally as far I have noticed, sockets are two pieces assembly, one exterior cup, with and interior cup and both makes a "sandwich" with housing.

the interior cup fits into the exterior cup, just like the bulb, getting inside and twisting. The deal is... could you try to remove it ? I don't think its posible with all the years, rust and dust.

FLG

Well worst case I wasted 20 bucks on the set from ebag and just need to buy new ones from year one.

Ill see how it looks wen I get em.

ACUDANUT

Please do, and post some pic's and we'll make this a education thread.

FLG

Well year one firicken failed!!!

What else is new?

So that rear harness that the guy said "has the sockets" isnt the damn harness, its the harness that goes from the front of the car to the rear of the car to be connected to the tail light harnesses.

Either way i could use it but, how badly will i have to modify this harness to work? If its just a few wire swaps i can live with it. Nacho?? Or would i be better modifying a 73 harness to work with 71 lights?

I also have this old harness i picked up off ebay, im going to attempt to separate the sockets tomorrow, well see how it goes.

FLG

OK, heres an update.

As predicted you CANNOT seperate the cups, there not really pressed into eachother, but rather the upper cups bottom lip is wrapped around by the bottom cups upper lip (does that make any sense?)

Basically if you took 2 round pieces of metal, one with a bit more circumference than the other and than wrapped the overlapping edge over the smaller one. There simply not coming apart with out breaking.

I will try to locate some replacement sockets and make my own wiring harness.

But the other question remains...do i return the harness that i bought from YO or can i use it?

ACUDANUT

What about drilling the sockets out, or maybe use a round file ?  Once you make room for the new sockets, JB weld them in and make a ground wire to your frame.  As for your harness from Y/O it might be cheaper to keep it...Their shipping ain't cheap. However, you might call and complain about the wrong info you were given. :Twocents:

Thanks guys,

I'm going to local stores this week to see what is available and test fit them first  :2thumbs:

Also found some others online for much cheaper (around 4$)

Nacho, do I return this harness and modify a 73 for rt lights or can I modify this harness to work?
:2thumbs:

I didn't found it on the moment I was posting, but was pretty sure they were available lot cheaper. The pic and link was used for example purpouse.

Let me know if you find them, and how much. I could be interested for a Dart I'm fixing the tail light harness too. 2 for 1157 and 2 for the back up light ( 1156 right ? ). I'm hoping diameter its the same for Darts than the rest. It could be some difference due this kind of socket is designed to not remove lense and just remove the socket so the bulb head is able to fit through the acces hole. Thats diff from Chargers where the socket hole is just right for the socket diameter

so yo got the rear body harness... Do you need it ? is not common to get this harness damaged. For the price I woudl say return it... yes, shipping cost lost, but better that that get $150 spent in something you won't need.

UNLESS you compare with the one in your car and you think it will be a good replaced part.

FLG

Im pretty sure mine is decent so you do have a point there nacho, but at the same time new wiring cant hurt. Whats the difference between a 71 body harness and a 73?

If i have to modify this one quite a bit than ill just send it back.

Nacho-RT74

no diff on rear 71/74 body harness as far I noticed. Diff are on sockets harnesses. The required ground for 73/74 tail lights is on driver side tail light harness not on rear body harness.... even on 71/72s is on tail light harnesses, but just for the sidemarkers

I got one in PERFECT conditions in $15 at Carlisle... used, yes but FAAAR AWAY BETTER than mine :D even still with cloth tube in pretty decent conditions and complete, just need the gast tank grommet replaced

look at these sockets... prices are not the best, not bad either being free shipping and getting maybe the all 6 pieces together but brand and PN can help on local shops:
http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/Standard-S44-Tail-Light-Socket-Pigtail-Connector-NEW-/230570294416?pt=Motors_Car_Truck_Parts_Accessories&fits=Model%3ACharger&hash=item35af0f7c90

I'm pretty sure will need to enlarge the hole on housings, since as I told, these look to be for snap on kind, where socket is removed for bulb replacement, ( like A bodies ) not the lense like ours, so the bulb must be able to fit through the hole.

These auctions shows the specs on pics, the hole requirement... 29 mm ( 1 1/8" ), so you can tell what will need to make on tail light housing to fit.

maybe there are better options? dunno. I like these though

Sure to make work this on 73/74s will need to sold the harness ground wire at socket cup, but 71/72s will be fine just like it is

Not bad prices either, im going to get to local stores next week on my days off and see whats available there for some test fitting.

Nice finds nacho!

The housing in question is already messed up by the sockets so a little more enlarging won't hurt.

I've got enough harness to fix everything and just splice in new sockets. So this might work out well.

Nacho-RT74

yeap... and will make easier to replace bulbs if you get room between bumper and valence

Honestly I would go with S44 and S45N pieces since they will be wired like the originals, not wired grounds, just chassis. Sure local parts shops will have them

Let us know how it turns out...I am doing the same thing in the spring !!

FLG

After chatting with a member he told me it is possible to bend the inner lip and remove the wiring...well see how it goes.

Nacho-RT74

yeah, maybe remove wires, backelite and pin terminals, keeping the sockets in place I guess... well that will work too, however half of problems are socket related due the lack of ground because the rust.

Wow nacho thanks!

Should have re worded my other post, he was able to bend the lip and remove the whole socket and than use 2 small hammers to bend it back..so far its been good. Gonna try things on wed or thurs.

Frank,

If you run into problems, let me know or email me a pic of the socket that you might need.  I have a harness that god only knows what it is out of that came with my charger back when I got it.  I figured I would save it just in case a socket went bad or something.
