Is there anyway to find out about a cars history (selling dealer, etc.)?

The only way I know of is to contact any previous owners, they can (sometimes) lead you to more owners and maybe the original owner who could tell you what dealer it came from.
I had a A12 Super Bee once that only had a reproduction fender tag when I bought the car.
I called a previous owner who led me to a couple other owners and one of them told me he took the tag off 15 years ago and still had it in his desk drawer.
No one else knew about it because they never bothered to do any research. It was one of my luckiest days when I called him and he said he would mail it to me.

I'm pretty sure the previous owner of my car is dead, although I did ask him where he got the car.  He said he "bought it off some lady".  Is there anyway to find out what dealership it was sold at via the vin?

Unfortunately no.  There are certain rare exceptions like 69 Daytonas or cars from 67 and older but for the vast majority, no.
