I'll walk you through this...  I live in a development.  1/4 to 1/2 acre plots.  average house is 4 bedroom.  Iv'e lived in my house for 14 years.   I try to be a good neighbor.  We don't have loud parties (even before we had kids) I keep my grass cut, I'd help anyone with anything.  I'm nice to everyone, I wave and say hello to all of them, even the dirtbags.

So we have a few neighbors who have loud parties and I've never really complained because while I don't, people have the right to live and as long as it's not out of bounds, I'll take a bit of inconvenience.   Last night, the music started around 7:30.  The local ordinance says no loud stuff after 11pm.  As I watch the clock go past 11:30, 12:00...I'm getting irate.  I'm in my house, it's 25 degrees out, windows closed,  and It's still booming!  I was gonna go over there and tell them to shut it but the idea of getting my ass kicked by 50 drunk people (I thing there might have been a lot more, they were everywhere) wasn't appealing at 1am.  So I called the cops, they came around 1:30 and it took an hour for them to break it up.

So I wake up today and marched my ass over there and told the guy that it was me who called the cops and that I get it that he wants to party and it's fun and all but he's gotta knock that shit off around 12.  told him that if he keeps it up, I will have the cops at every one of his parties. I didn't yell, but it was hard not to.  He said ok, didn't argue.  While there's not a ton of beerbottles and such, there are a few on my side yard (faces their house) and some around the corner. Nothing crazy but I'm probably going to pick them up and toss them in his yard.  That garbage pisses me off as much as being kept up from the noise.

Was I wrong on this?  I'm 41.  Have I just "forgotten what it's like?" and I'm now the neighborhood crotchety old man?

im lucky that the big partiers usually shut down at midnight. only prob is their garage has been converted into a bar. so its 3 nights a week every week. and their backyard is my back yard and thats also the mens room which sets my dogs off when they go out. the neighbors are nice to us, and are trading their house with some other friends that dont party cause they want that 3 car garage for a bigger bar. :2thumbs: you were right to do what you did.

I have a neighbor that is "Dark complected" and enjoys a REALLY loud "block Party"...While I don't mind some of the music they play as some of the old skool rap/hip hop I enjoyed as a 20 something, I do NOT care for the "kill whitey" type music they tend to play every so often...This happened alot, so I decided to go fire up the 'ol stroker and let 505 C.I. loose in front of the house....A couple WOT blasts and a few burnouts with open headers later, they got the hint....There's another way i deal with them on occasion...

I've been known to get a bunch of the "good 'ol boyz" down to the house when I can clearly see the croud gathering at his house, and begin to CRANK UP the Hank Williams Jr. That usually puts things about even....

I agree with most stuff.  If I chose to go over the next day I would of been less pissed off.  I'd let one time slip by, but if it kept happening I'd get more upset.

I don't party, and I never really did. I'd have walked over, and asked that they tune it down, and probably ended up having a beer or something anyway.

Regardless; I don't ever call the cops unless somebody is being put in physical danger. I learned young that when the police arrive, it doesn't matter who called them, NOBODY goes home happy.

Can't say I blame you for not wanting to interact with a lot of drunks. I suppose it depends on how often they've had the loud blaring parties, but I may have let it go until the next day & just went over to the house & said something face to face trying to prevent it in the future. It's a judgment call, but by telling him that it was you who called might make a bigger impact in a positive way by showing that you aren't trying to remain anonymous.

One thing I had always hated when I used to live in the suburbia of Bergen County, NJ was the spineless neighbor who bitched about something without ever considering knocking on the door in person. I have a lot more respect for someone who is up front about things. Not saying that the cops should never be called, but I'd rather open the door to a neighbor than an officer or town official. Of course it can backfire, but I know for myself I wouldn't hold a grudge on someone if I had done something that pissed them off.

My wife does a great job reminding me that "not that many years ago......" or  "you're not going to be that guy".

A few summers ago some kids started their own fireworks show down on the beach at about 3am on a Friday morning.  I was livid until my head cleared and I remembered the cold beer, tan girls and beach from back-in-the-day.  Now when it happens I can barely keep from joining in - But, I REALLY don't want to be THAT GUY.

I've done it both ways but calling the cops seems to work better. First off, like you said it's cold outside and do you want the potential for some drunk jackass to try proving his manhood at your expense? No. Let the guys with guns and handcuffs do their job and earn their money. Second, what real authority do you have in the situation? You're just a stuffy old whiner in their eyes and stopping the party ruins the fun for 50 people. More often than not it just turns into an argument and assuming there's no physical altercation it's likely you'll still have to call the cops to stop them anyway. The boys in black get paid something like $50k/year of your tax revenue to do this stuff so make the call, get them out of the donut shop to do the job while you lay comfy in your warm bed. No brainer.

Around here, they get 100K a year and that's no exaggeration.  They did the right thing.  Showed up within 1/2 hour and took care of it.  I have no problem with how the cops handled it at all.  One on one, I can handle myself.  I had my coat on and was out the door at 1am fuming, don't get me wrong.  Truthfully, I had underestimated how many people were there and when I saw the huge crowd, I had 2nd thoughts.  At this point it's 1am and they are all tanked.  Also, the guy is Spanish and barely speaks english and I have enough problems communicating with him on a good day, let alone if he's half in the bag. (I actually translated all my bitching into spanish before I went over there and delivered the message in a mix spanglish... I said "ruido Fuerte" a lot of times! lol)   I have no doubt that I would have ended up in a fight if I had kept going.  You just know someone would have said or done something towards me and I would have lost my temper aand there you go.   I don't like having to call the man, so that's why I went over the next day and confronted them.  It was so F'ing loud I can't believe that I was the first and only one to call the cops. As far as letting it go to the next day, F that.  If the cops didn't come, this would have been an all nighter.  I have young kids and my 10 year old woke up twice from this.

I guess he was embarassed because the few times I have had off from work and taken my son to the bus stop, this guy is always out there with his 8 year old (wonder where she was during the party?) today, my wife said he was a no show and sent the kid by herself and the kid apologizes to my wife for "her dad's party" .  of course she let the girl know it was not her fault and all.  I feel bad for this kid actually. The whole thing stinks.

We have underground electric service and his meter is in the same spot as mine on the outside of the house at ball bag level.  I suppose I could have ended his party early by yanking the meter and shutting him down. around here, the meter pan cover is "locked" only by a small wire tag so they know if you messed with it. you could cut it with scissors.  I know, that would be stupid...yet effective lol

You did the right thing, IMO. Like you said , if you had walked over all pissed off and told them to turn the music down "or else" , I'm sure you'd have gotten your ass handed to you... So, considering your options, you chose the right one..

Another thing I have to give you credit for, is that it took balls to go over and tell they you were the one that called. You could have left them wondering "which neighbor did I piss off", but you took the high road and fessed up, letting them know it was you and that you'd do it again..

I'm curious to see how the next couple of weeks pans out for you.. Will they party again, louder and longer, or did your method work?  :popcrn:

Rolling_Thunder

you did the right thing...    buddies of mine threw a party for a friend who just came back from Afghanistan down in Newport Beach, CA where the noise is to stop around 10pm.    We had a HUGE bonfire (talking about 8-10' here) - loud country music, and we were all drunk playing Call of Duty (we had a projector and had it showing on the wall of the neighboring house) -  not to mention about 3/4 of the people there were high speed military (Green Berets, Marine Recon, Marine STA, Ranger Recon, SEALs, CCTs, and PJs) so we also had about 100 firearms of various sorts.

NBPD came by three times between 10pm and 1am - ended up raiding the house due to the fact the visually saw weapons on some of the guys...

All in all...   it's one of those stories that starts out...    "So, I was out with my friends...."

the problem isn't the person complaining its the total lack of respect for your fellow neighbors to have an all night party in the 1st place, either go out to a lake or country crossroads with a bonfire or use a banquet hall.  what makes them think you want to have a party at 1am when you have to go to work the next day??

This is the perfect statement.   I've had to say something to my neighbors a few times when they were throwing backyard parties on Sunday nite till 12am.  Finely I just started calling the police.  I wasn't the only one either.

I've called the police on the lady behind us cause she will let her frigging basset hounds bark for an hour after 10 pm.  Called police once, then actually walked through the backyard and knocked on her door to complain.

I wouldn't mind it but when you have little children trying to sleep, it really pisses me off.  We've already threatened a few neighbors teenagers if they didn't keep the steroes and the speeding down, they were going to have some problems.

4cruzin

Growing up in close proximity to the neighbors can cause issues.  I was a loud person when I was younger and certainly had many late night parties.  I played electric guitar and loved loud music.  But I always knew that on the weekdays, 10:00 was the turn down point and 11:00 on the weekends.  It's all about being considerate to the people around you!

But during the 11:00 AM to 10:00 PM time  . . .  :2thumbs:
Tomorrow is promised to NOBODY . . . .
