so here im with being confused, again!trying to learn about things!
what is the best way for rust/paint removal?sandblast, sodablast, dry iceblaast?also mediablasting is just a name for all these?
if i wanna do blasting sheatmetal what would i need to have?is it difficult to do it?im a woman so consider that :nana:

thanks

It all depends on what your blasting, kinda like asking what size screw driver do I use? Well that depends on the size of the screw.

When it comes to body panels, you want to use the least agressive method possible..most people soda blast. You can sandblast some older cars that are built like tanks but you still need to be careful and its best left to a pro, I'm sure you can blast our cars as well but most won't recommend it as you can warp the metal, thus soda blasting is recommended.

Other things like brackets and the such, those heavier metal parts can usually be thrown in a bead blasting bachine or sand blasted without worring about warpage.

Soda blasting is messy and required a LOT of prep before you can shoot panel. You have to properly neutralize soda or you'll have problems later on.

Yep, make sure you read up on things that concern each type of removal process...some are more involved than others. Soda blasting is least agressive, good for body panels though its not going to remove much in terms of rust. Thinks like frame rails your going to want to go to a more agressive method. If you bring it to an experienced blaster he should know what to do.

for stripping paint soda works great, but it will not remove any rust,so if you have rust, you'll have to sand blast or use media. Why do you get Mr. Caveman to do all that crappy work :smilielol:

Yeah, there are multiple different types of particles to use to blast things.  Sand being the heaviest.  Soda, plastic medias, mixes, etc.

The idea is to start with a lighter media and then work heavier and heavier until you get the part clean.  The heavier medias will heat the panels more and if you go too heavy you'll warp the panels.  (If you warp them, there's no feasible way to un-warp them except for tedious sanding and filling like any other dents.)

Another common mistake by amateurs is chromed parts - DO NOT SANDBLAST THEM.  It leaves them more expensive to get replated than if you just gave them to the plater in the surface-rusted peeling condition that they came off the car.

so,if i wanted to blast my car i would need to buy all those blasters? :scratchchin: it would be cheaper to take it to somewhere to do it?but let's say i wanna do it myself then what?buy all of the blasters?seeing all those restos with the old parts blasted and painted!they look so good and it makes me want to learn about it and one day might do mine!i know it's not easy,i guess it's not easy but it has some satisfaction to do something beautiful yourself  :drool5:then just to take it to someone to do it!am i talking rubbish?dont think so!

thanks guys

I like the way you think Veronika! There is a lot of satisfaction in saying "I did it all myself" instead of just opening your wallet (or purse in your case) and paying to have another do your work. Some of the different medias can be used in one blaster (different tips) so you may not have to buy all different blasters for differing medias but soda blasting is best to have dedicated equipment for.  :Twocents:

If you're wanting to fully strip the car by blasting, you will need to invest in air compressor that will be able to keep up with blaster and I can tell you my 10 hp 44 CFM's compressor does not stop running, which tells me it's barely getting the job done, You're better off taking to a blaster and knock it out, because if you have never done this, remember that media is not cheap, you will need proper air supply or a good respiratorprotective gear, air compressor that will cost at the least a few grand,if you get a smaller compressor, you will be at it for days ,and another small detail,it makes a huge mess

Thanks guys!

i guess it would be better to take it to somewhere BUT what if i would love to do it myself!if i do blasting then i would do painting as well so could use the compressor for that!practise makes perfect! :2thumbs: wouldn't just jump at the car and do it i would get someone to show me how its done and give me tips!
